Hi Everyone!
I started playing the clarinet in the 5th grade and played through my first semester of college. I put down my instrument then (1987) and didn't touch a clarinet until about a year or so ago.
When I started playing again I used the internet to look for sites such as this one to help me catch up to what was happening in the clarinet world. The one thing I noticed that seemed to be such a hot topic was reed adjustments. I always played on the reeds as they came out of the box. No one ever taught me how to adjust reeds to get the best sound and longest life from them.
My question is does anyone know of any books that can help me learn the basics of reed adjustments? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
And for those of you wondering what we did when we came across a reed that was just too bad to be useable...smash the tip against any solid object and throw that sucker away!

Clarinet reeds are not that hard to adjust and not that expensive (unlike double reeds) if you screw up- get a reed knife, a sharpening stone, and some honing oil. The thinner the tip- the better the response- not many clarient players adjust their reeds.. I only started by accident after I took up oboe playing.

i would recomend finding a library that has "The Clarinet" (ICA magazine) in it, looking up the index and finding all the 10000000 articles on adjusting reeds.A great article from the early 1990s by Henry Larsen comes to mind plus many others. Many of the "classic clarinet books"- eg by David Pino, Keith Stein- have very good chapters on this too, and should be in a good library.
I have lots of respect and admiration for Mr Opperman, but i have to say that i never found his book that helpfull- although i did read it AFTER i'd read everything else...

Another source (lesser known) is Ben Armato's book, "Perfect A Reed...and Beyond"

Larry Guy's "Selection, Adjustment and Care of Single Reeds" is very good. It's also available from Gary Van Cott's excellent: "Clarinet Books and More".
