I have an old Guy Humphrey (Paris) b-flat soprano that belonged to my father. Years ago, he told me that he had it when he was stationed in Greenland (WWII). I'm certain that he didn't buy it new. Can anyone give a possible date on this instrument? Dad's gone now so I can't ask him. I can't get anywhere in my net searches. Thanks for your help in advance.

In the words of Dave S, [paraphrased], Guy H was/is a tradename [for US sale] of clarinets made by a lesser-reputed maker, prob. before 1940, what we call "stencil" horns. Search the Phorum for more info. Don

On the bell above the Humphrey name, in a banner, it says "9th superieure". I can't really make it out, but it looks like 9th. There are also 2 stars beneath the name. The upper joint says the same minus the banner.

Bill - For me, the real test is "how well does it play?, easily and in tune with itself [and others] ? As I recall that time period, France, on woodwinds, indicated the best, and Superior, with stars attached would also be a plus. Many of us have found "great" names on mediocre clarinets and vice versa. Let us know your feelings on this apparent good one, please. Don

How well it plays is in direct proportion to how well I play it. I played it in high school 20+ years ago & together we were good enough to be #2 in the clarinet section. We're getting reaquainted now so the tone isn't what it should be, especially in the upper register (time will improve this), but it does seem to play well enough. I plugged up the bottom end of it & blew into the top with all keys closed - it holds air. It should, it's been repaired 3 times over the years (cracks). It's value is irrelevant, it belonged to my dad. That's enough for me. I would just like to get a good idea of it's age. I'm almost certain it was made prior to 1940. Dad grew up in an almost Walton type rural area & surely couldn't afford a new instrument. Well, thanks for all your input Don. It's much appreciated.
