I'm going to get a new clarinet in about 3 weeks (finally, yeeesss!!!!)and the Vintage has caught my eye. Does anyone have any experience using one of these instruments? Any thoughts, comments, or suggerstions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I had a hard time choosing between the Vintage and the Fesival, because I loved the sound of both but after about 45 min. of switching my mouthpiece I picked the Festival over the Vintage because the Vintage has a slightly brighter tone and I liked the darker tone and the extra key. But Hey if you like it go for it, since your reasons are good! Great choice!

I guess you like darker tone typically made by small bore.
As you recognaized in Vintage ad,its bore size is smaller than ordinary R-13. If I buy one, I would become a little nervous about this,since in future if I buy a new barrel or a mouthpiece, there might be a difficulty.

I'm a proud owner of an R-13 Vintage and i wouldn't give up my clarinet for anything! I tried out many other clarinets ( including a couple of Leblanc Opus' ), but when i tried out my Vintage i knew it was "the one"! In an earlier post, Sara mentioned that it has a hint of brightness in the sound, but that is the complete opposite to what i've found in my clarinet. It's tone is rich, dark, and resonant. Different strokes for different folks i guess. I defenitely suggest you try a couple out when you start your quest for a new clarinet. Good Luck!

I've only had the opportunity of playing a few at various conventions and exhibitions. All of the ones I played were absolutely FAB! The tone was much bigger than the current R-13's I've played (including mine, and it's one of the best R-13's from the last 10 years... sans ones worked on by Brannen or Tim Clark.) For me they were about the same in the "darkness" level as regular R-13's. More free blowing. I prefered the way they played with my Fobes barrel, as usual, instead of the stock barrel.
When it coms time for me to replace my horns (in 15-20 years or so, assuming they don't get stolen or run over) my Bb will certainly be a Vintage (not sure what I'll do for an A though unless they modify their A clarinets).

In my experience, the Vintage is a good clarinet. But, the question that I have is, what is the point of getting a brand new clarinet that is a copy of a clarinet that they (Buffet) produced 30-40 years ago? Look for one from that time period. I own one from that time period and, as far as I am concerned, I like the older one better.
I guess the other point is, the new Vintage model does have a smaller bore than the new R-13 model. But, the bore in the new R-13 has also been improved to have a bigger sound and even their characteristic "dark" Buffet sound is still there. So, why go back to stuffy and hard to play "dark"?
I also agree to a comment earlier, the Festival is an "awesome" horn. The extra Ab/Eb key is really nice to have. The sound is a lot bigger than that of the Vintage also. It might just take some time to find that "dark" sound in the Festival.
Lastly, keep playing anything that you can get your hands on. Test every thing that you can test. But, when you test, use your mouthpiece, ligature, and reed that you would always use. This so you can stay consistant in what you think you are hearing. This is the only way that you will know if you find the "right" one.

I, too, am I a proud owner of a Vintage. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world! I posted earlier about my baby, but I don't remember what the thread title was exactly or who posted it.
Cathy- try searching the old message on the board. The Vintage vs. true Vintage controversy has come up several times. Good luck finding the perfect horn!

I echo the sentiments of Jason. I have a new Vintage and it's awesome. This includes that nice dark sound. Play several models of the Vintage if your dealer has access to more than one. I think there may be a higher variation of sound on the Vintages than normal. I'm just guessing. I played three initially. The first two were non-descript. The third was out of this world. Mouthpiece will also make a difference. Take your time. Good luck!

I have a regular R-13 and played a girls Vintage before. We both agreed that my R-13 had a darker sound...but thats could just be me and the choice of my reed and mouthpiece.

I own 3 Vintage Bb's and several R13's.
Also, today was a 'Buffet day' at my local Univ School of Music.
it was great to try clarients without having to pay round trip postage/insurance.

I play a Vintage and chose that clarinet over many others because of it's even tone and a crystal clear sound that is difficult to describe. Comfortable keys compared to other R-13s also made a difference. It plays the upper register much more even and without the thin, sharpness I found in other R-13s. Everyone is different and your experience may vary so try as many clarinets you can get your hands on and see if I am right.

To answer why would you get a 'Vintage' rather than an old R13:
1. It's not the same as an old R13, only some of the key bore measurements correspond
2. Intonation is truly fantastic on a new Vintage, and it scales beautifully
3. Tone is wonderfully pure and clear, different to a '50s R13, more similar to late '70s/ early '80s R13 around serial nos 180K-210K.
4. Totally different keywork: old these old R13s it is rather 'finer'
5. No sloppy keys
6. Silver plating compared with old 'maillechort' - soem prefer the 'drag' you get on silver plating, others prefer 'maillechort' - depending on preference this is a plus.
7. If it made me feel great, I'd buy a new Vintage lke a shot as a preference assuming I found one I especially liked...
