 Szell recording dates?
Author: david dow
Date:   2002-10-12 01:03

Dear freinds: I listened a good deal to Marcelluss/Szell Beethoven 3 prior to performance and can't find enough adjectives for this inspired recording. That being said

Does anyone out there know the session date for the individual symphonies?-I guess they were recorded over a 7 or 8 year period?

Sincerely,
David D

David...I own the complete Beethoven/Szell set both on cd (Sony) and the original LP set (Epic).

The dates of the recordings are as follows:
Sym 1 - 10/2/64
Sym 2 - 10/23/64
Sym 3 - ?
Sym 4 - 1960 (specific date not noted)
Sym 5 - 10/11/63 and 10/25/63
Sym 6 - 1/20/62 and 1/21/62
Sym 7 - 1963 (specific date not noted)
Sym 8 - ?
Sym 9 - 4/21/61 4/22/61

Since the original Epic set was released in 1965, Symphonies 3 and 8 (obviously) could not be any older than that date.

No where on either the LP or the cd are the recording dates for #3 or #8...GBK

"...I have always admired and enjoyed this wonderful cycle..."

None better! ...GBK (expecting a barrage of contrary opinions from the Karajan, Reiner, etc... fan club)

Beeth 3rd 2/22-23/57 (with Marc Lifschey, oboe)

Beeth 8th 4/15/61 (during a one season shot at double lip!) and just 6 short months before his recording of the Mozart concerto in Oct. '61 (played single lipped). There's a lesson in there somewhere about the advantages of having learned the use of double lip! (Al Genovase played oboe that one season while Marc L. went to the Met orchestra as a trade)

Beeth 4th 4/5/63 Szell previously recorded it w/the Cleve. orch on 4/22/47 when (Portnoy?) was the clarinetist.

Beeth 7th 10/30-31/59

3 and 8 were obviously released seperately from the original Epic set since the sessions do pre-date the '65 release date of the set.

Dear Greg: Thanks for the info on Marcellus. i played double lip for many years in the 80s and finally switched after I came back from university.
I also like the Karajan 63 cycle as well with Karajan. The one performance in the Szell set I particularly like is the 3rd- and the 7th.
Harold wriight decided I should switch back to single lip slowly. My intonation was a little low at times on single- and I felt I need a more relxed and easier way to play. Double lip is murder if you have the slightest cold sore!

Sincerely

Dear Greg: What years were David Glazer with Cleveland? Quite some time ago I attended a summer camp with him as my private instructor. It was quite a while later and a fellow student said he played Principal in Cleveland at one time.

Back on topic. In my opinion I feel the Szell is one the finest cycles recorded for a number of reasons...each symphony is played beautifully. i will elaboate

1. in C Major has a tremendous zest and excellent articulation in all departments. the finale has the sparke of Haydn. Some interpeters are LEADEN AND HEAVY compared to this one!
2 The Second is truly an epic and broad performance. Wonderful phrasing and sensitive playing throughout. The slow movement is a true gem with great clarinet work and wind playing thoughtfully executed.
3 The Eroica is a truly barnstorming performance. Earth shattering with finely honed ensemble work in the finale. In spite of the recording it goes straight to the heart of the Heroic quality. I admire Karajan too for his fleetfooted mannerin this music too. I also know Szell was invited to Berlin to conduct by Karajan with the Berlin Phil, and made a great Dvorak Cello Concerto ewith Fournier (and the Berlin Phil) ..nice record.
4 I truly love this work and it is played with great expression. The crispness of ensemble is truly fine.
5 Szell has just the right balance of tradition and doing things his way. Its easy to make the opening banal or even vulgar, but Szell has the right balance of force and beauty. The scherzo and finale link very nicely. A fine 5th.
6 This is one of my favorite pastorals due to the tremendous wind work by the Cleveland winds. Truly great tuning and artistry, only Karajan and Bohm rival here. I am not sure I have heard too many convincing 6th performances, but this is truly fine.
7. The 7th is played with nice quickly articulated tempos and the finale is played very cleanly. I think Toscanni in New York in 36 may be an influence here. The cleanness and brilliance of Cleveland through the performance is a wonder. I like the Allegretto at this tempo.
8 It is quite nice how relaxed and genial this recording is. Some orchestral performance are a little hard driven especially in the 1st movement when the tension does not let up for the lrical passages- however here the lyrical nate of the opening is throghout the who movement, nice dovetailing of phrases between all sections.
9 The jewel in the crown, the opening is truly mysterious. Some very fine work in the scherzo and superb detail of instrument groups. Stokowki in this piece drives me nuts. Szell alllows the phrases to speak for themselves, yet gives weight and urgency when neccessary. The slow music is truly heavenward. The finale is truly fine with good balance between orchestra and choir. Solists are also fine. If some don't have this dic its worth the price!

Sincerely
David Dow
