 High Notes
Author: Steve

Hi all,

I'm currently teaching a girl that is having real difficulty playing any high notes, from about G above the stave upwards.

I've made sure that she is keeping her mouth relaxed but that seems to make no difference.

Just wondered if anyone has any further ideas to what I could try as she is finding it all quite frustrating.

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked out her instrument to be sure that it is in sound condition? Is she using an appropriate mouthpiece or some piece of junk that came with the horn?

Is her tongue position high, is she hearing the notes before she plays them, does she have enough breath support?
Good luck

Julia

"I've made sure that she is keeping her mouth relaxed"

There needs to be some support for these tones. Perhaps she is taking your advice too seriously.

Try pushing upward (gently, but firmly, toward her mouth) on here right hand thumb while she is playing. Her reaction will be to increase her embouchure tightness just enough to more adequately support the reed in producing those higher tones.

First of all check out the instrument, some pads might not be sealing. Usually the G and above will come fairly easily before the student can play B to F of the second register. She shouldn't have to work that hard!

How is her intonation on the bottem register? You can't think to have a top if you have nothing to build it on top of.
