I am arranging The Nutcracker, by Tchaicovsky, arranged by John Schaum for Wind Ensemble. I want all your opinions on this. I am a 22 year old student at the Western Connecticut State University Music Department in Connecticut.

You are re-arranging an arrangement??? For whom???--and have you obtained the publishers (and arrangers) consent????
Other than legalities, stay true to the original intent of the music, unless, of course, you have some "new age" ideas in mind. (I've always wanted to hear that high piccolo part played on an *effer* or C clarinet)

There already is a reduction which we did last year which has exactly that in the Chinese Dance. It wasn't fun picking up a cold horn and having to play that in tune (12 times no less...)
Kimberly, don't tale Williams advice lightly. The world of music is a small one and if Mr. Schaum gets wind (no pun intended) of your unauthorized arrangement there will be legal troubles for you and WCSU no end.

As far as I'm aware, Tchaikovsky's music is out of copyright - end of story.
If you want to adapt his music - go to the source (manuscript) or work from an out of copyright edition.
Why you'd want to arrange the Nutcracker for Wind Ensemble is beyond me - the whole work is about 2 hours long, unless you're talking about the "suite".
rmk is right on the ball about Schaum's version - now that IS in copyright are there ARE serious ramifications.
