Can anyone recommend a fairly modern piece to be played in a recital by a 1st year university student incorporating the clarinet in a small chamber ensemble using a singer or narrator and involving an element of drama/theatre?
The obvious answer is Soldiers Tale, but it's too long to fit in the planned programme.

Walton's Facade. It is compartmentalized enough you can break it apart if the whole thing is too much for the program.

Walton's Facade is great stuff, but it doesn't feature clarinet and is really tricky for the narrator.
If you can do with just soprano, clarinet and piano, there's Rorem's settings of poems by Sylvia Plath (called, I think, "Ariel"), but it's harrowing poetry and quite difficult -- perhaps beyond a first-year university student.
If it doesn't have to be 20th century, I suggest Schubert's Offertory "Totus in Corde Langueo." It's not particularly dramatic, but it's wonderful music -- about 5 minutes, for soprano, clarinet and string ensemble. The parts may not be published, but it's in the complete Schubert edition, and it shouldn't be hard to cut apart a photocopy. It calls for C clarinet, but it's slow enough to transpose easily. You could do the same with Mozart's "Parto, Parto."
