 Disappointed ...
Author: Mark Charette, Webmaster

I must say that I'm a bit disappointed with some of our "regulars" on the BBoard. I left for a wedding this weekend, thinking things could more or less "roll on their own" for a couple of days, and I returned to find a few threads that went so far off topic as to be completely unsalvageable.

I didn't think I had to explicitly put down every "rule" on this BBoard - things normally seem to stay in hand reasonably well. But, for those of you who need some reminding, not only is there no advertising, there's

No politics
No religious proselytizing
No history lessons (other than clarinet history)
No gender discrimination
No spelling lessons
No grammar lessons
No monologs before "quitting" the BBoard. Either you're asking for your ego to be stroked ("please don't leave ...") or you just want to have the last word. The classiest people to leave this BBoard wrote to me and a few other friends and we had some fruitful discussions "off-line".
...

There's more, but I'm tired today ... you can fill in the rest using your common sense.

Like Yul Brenner said in the 10 commandments:

"Thus let it be written; thus let it be done."

Or is that religious?

It's as if the class got out of control when the regular teacher was absent.

Send them all to the detention room...

See Mark...we do need you (or at least a couple of hall monitors!)...GBK (who has seen his share of rowdy classes - yes, even in music)

With this Board are you able to have moderators? If so, then if might be nice to have a couple people just check up on things while you are gone. Having a couple more people with power might help.

Yes, I can let other people moderate the BBoard while I'm gone. However, there's a dichotomy involved:

The people that <b>want</b> to moderate are the ones that shouldn't;
The ones that <b>should</b> be moderators are the ones that don't want to.

The job's not fun - it's a fine line you end up walking and you make some enemies on the way, along with having to keep your mouth shut much longer than you'd like to ...

Mark,
After an involuntary six-week absence from the bb, it's good to be back -- but you are right, I too wish we could keep it to clarinets. Your gentle guidance is much appreciated.

Mark Charette

This site is very good, I have recommended it to players from experienced to raw beginners, if I could not answer a question I tell them to ask on here, they have had sensible answers most of the time, but some inevitable conflicts, whenever I can I contribute my half pence worth of hopefully useful advice, and of course I have asked the odd question myself. I must look at the forum at least twice a day; there is always something interesting to read!

You're all welcome - I <b>do</b> appreciate the support.

I just wish I was unnecessary as moderator - most of the time things go along fine, but once in a while things get way out of hand (only a few times, really, but each time hurts ...).

I love you all dearly as my "disembodied" friends. Keep at it, but keep on subject. More or less ;^)

Now that the rules are in print, couldn't there be a button at the top of the page headed "rules". There will be some writers who would probably be more cooperative if they actually knew in advance what these rules are, and could easily find them. There are plenty of other forums which are more or less open slather, and these forums may set an assumed precedent for this forum.

No making assumptions about 'today's youth' without actually trying for a moment to see things through their eyes... Aarg, that made me VERY mad.

I can already see this topic going *that* way, we should all just quit while we're ahead.

See Laurie's post for the very reason I won't print up a list (Laurie - follow Morrigan's advice and quit while you're ahead). Pretty soon there are a hundred "don'ts" and people bitching at me when I let through some that don't strictly follow the rules - and just about everyone wants to "bend" them when it suits them - but
not when it suits another. I make exceptions all the time - but I won't for a while right now.

Well I'll put in my 2 cents that is probably only worth a plug nickel but the comment about this resembling a newspaper I find very appropriate. There are articles in the news that I simply do not read. I guess that with a little age and experience that I just avoid things that I do not want to participate in, and by avoiding it and not recognizing or promoting further discussion one would hope that it diminishes it's importance. Even a trained marshal arts expert would rather avoid a fight than run in to potentially experience harm. How many posts mushroom with no responses?

Mark does an admirable job at keeping the children (not age but demeanor) in line on the playground but let us all try to keep our own discussions civil and not need to tattle-tale to the monitor. As Mark indicated there are few that could be as fair - overall- in maintaining a spectrum of participants on the BB in some semblance of order while respecting "free speech" tenants. A little fun now and again is welcome - don't complain about it - get over it - just tune it out and read the more elucidating posts (because there are many). If you want to leave - just leave, if you want to join - just join in.

Thanks Mark
The Doctor
