 square pause?
Author: susannah

just wondering... what is the difference between a normal pause and a 'square' shaped one (instead of having a semi-circle over a dot, its 3 sides of a square making basically the same shape). Also, does it have a name?

An example is in the cadenza from the 1st movement of the Francaix Concerto.

Thanks

Doesn't it mean a longer pause?

I was taught that the square pauses indicate "unproportioned" time ie. not related to pulse. The next entry is then supposed to sound like a surprise, or cut across any feeling of pulse that may carry on thruogh the rest. The implication is that when a composer also uses the normal curved pause they intend something more natural sounding whereby the pulse continues through the silence.
