On a recently acquired box of Rico Grand Concert reeds I notice, by the strength, the word "unfiled"
Do they also offer "filed" & if so, where do they file them and what effect does it have?

In the WW&BW catalog, they have separate order numbers for "filed" and "unfiled" Rico GC. Presumably there's a slight difference in profiling -- perhaps the straight-across removal of the bark, Vandoren-style, rather than having the bark be cut in a U shape and extending a little way down the sides. Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

Ken's description of filed versus unfiled is correct. So far as I know, Rico Grand Concert Select are available in three varieties:
Grand Concert Select, which are filed
Grand Concert Select Thick Blank, which are filed
Grand Concert Select Evolution, which are thick but unfiled
The first two are roughly equivalent to plain Vandoren's and V12's respectively.
Mitchell Lurie Standard are unfiled, but Mitchell Lurie Premium are filed.
Does it make any difference? Not if you play as badly as I do.

All of my reeds are 'filed' under, "Can't play fast" or "Can't play high notes" or "Can't do much but squeak in public"...
Seems to be a recurrent problem, regardless of brand or profile.
It never ceases to amaze me, how well other people play on these defective products!
