Does anyone happen to know what type of setup the British clarinetist Robert Plane uses? Just thought to ask, he sounds wonderful!

Yes, Robert Plane is one of my favorites, I have his recording of the Finzi Concerto and Five Bagatelles, and he has a simply gorgeous sound! From the picture, it looks like he has a Rovner Ligature and a Buffet clarinet, but I could be wrong. I hope someone else here knows!

One should be very careful in thinking and assuming that the clarinet being held in a photo on a CD cover, a website or promotional material is the one that was used for the recording of that CD.

I have know quite a few instrumentalists that are holding something completely different from what was used in the recording session. It could be the age of the photo or the place of the photo session or many other reasons why there is a difference.

There is a photo of me holding a clarinet on the back of a recent CD release. I used two very different clarinets for the recording, neither of which is in the photo.

Hi,

I heard him play in the BBC National orchestra of wales at the proms. He was superb especially in the solos in the Lutoslawski concerto for orchestra and the syzmanowski violin concerto

In answer to ken's question above:

The photo used for the CD was chosen by the producer out of several photos given him. The photos he had to choose from were part of a publicity package. There were some photos included from the actual recording session at Town Hall but he decided not to use them. All the clarinets in the photos used and photos not used were mine.

Tom, thanks for the response. I found myself in a similar situation a few years back on one of my own CDs. During recording, our producer decided the only pictures he wanted would be a host of session shots to be made into a collage for the booklet and only go with artwork on the cover. During post production design/packaging he opted to also go with a formal group shot on the cover PLUS the studio shots. I had used an R-13 for the session but on the day of the group shoot I mistakenly grabbed my Opus when leaving the house and didn't notice until I pulled it out of the case. I had no choice but take the group pics with that horn. Sure enough, when we received the first shipment of 5,000 units I checked it out and there were several close-ups with the Buffet stamp readily apparent and the Opus markings were clear as day as well...especially the articulated keys and silver plating. About a year went buy and nobody ever called me on it until a gig one night at a local high school. After the gig four band kids stormed up to me to get their CDs autographed and the first thing out of their mouths was, "hey, why the two different brands of clarinet?" I told them because I was filthy rich and like to make poor people insanely jealous. v/r KEN <;-)

tom piercy, how classy of you to rip me to shreds over such a small OBSERVATION. I didn't assume that's what he played, that would imply I had a definite answer, I said, and I quote "...it looks like he has a..." and "From the picture...". Note the worlds LOOKS LIKE and HAS, I never said "He definitely plays... From just looking at the picture."
Sorry to get narky, I've just been reading the Mouthpiece Nazi discussion...

Dear Morrigan,

I didn't "rip" you to shreds for your answer to a question. I wrote that "one shoud be careful." My comment was a simple caution and request, and perhaps some new information, to people to be careful in making assumptions, as I have read here, about which instrument, ligature or mouthpiece a player is using. It wasn't uniquely directed towards you.
Sincerely,
Tom Piercy

BTW, this is the first time I've replied to this BB...
I had a couple of lessons from Robert Plane in around 93/94 and he is a lovely player. I've only seen him a couple of times since then, but for some reason I think he plays Selmers (France), possibly Recitals or Signatures. Don't bet on it as I'm not convinced I know this for certain, and he may have changed instruments since I last saw him anyway.
