I have a 9-year old son who wants to start playing the clarinet. He seems to think that there might be a "child size" clarinet. I've also seen plastic clarinets, and prices all over the place. Any advice on what would be best for this kid would be appreciated.

An E flat clarinet may be the small clarinet he is looking for.
The better ones tend to be more expensive than the standard B flat
Clarinet. You can find cheap plastic E flat clarinets on Ebay.com .
Just do a search useing the key words "clarinet Eb" or "clarinet e flat".

A word of caution: avoid the Taiwanese imports which are seemingly flooding the market with their low price come on. The quality is very suspect, part replacement is next to impossible, and most of all, many repair techs will actually refuse to work on them.
Stay with quality brands - your child (and your sanity) will thank you...GBK

And some of those "quality" brands are: Buffet, LeBlanc, Selmer and Yamaha. Of the Eb clarinet "student models" associated with these companies, Selmer's Bundy Eb clarinet is perhaps the best.

Apart from the possibilities of an E flat or a Lyons C clarinet, if the child has problems covering the holes on a normal B flat, Vito make a 'closed hole' Bb clarinet (I've never seen one, but noticed it in a catalogue) which might solve the problem but allow him to join in with other players easier.

i just bought an old normandy closed hole clarinet to give to my daughter to learn on . i have only seen one other closed hole clarinet .what do they play like? the one i bought needs pads and inst playable
