I agree if all you are going to is march, go plastic. Most old clarinets are repairable, so fixing up your existing instrument is also a good option--unless the body is badly damaged (chipped, cracked, etc.) For an affordable "step-up" instrument, the Buffet E11 model will serve you well through high school and beyond. For an expensive "step-up" (for marching as well as concert performances) the Buffet Greenline model is just what you are looking for. Superior Buffet quality and, because of its composite construction, immune to cold weather damage (will never crack). Personally, if I owned a Greenline, I would not be afraid to play outdoor concerts, but would probably still use a plastic clarinet on the marching field for fear of "accidents". Whatever you do, try to find a good mouthpiece to go with whatever instrument you finally decide on. Good luck, and welcome back.
