Hi folks...
Am making a new case for my clarinets. Have seen Selmer and I believe Leblanc use suede or pigskin leather instead of velvet/velour to cradle the clarinets. Any thoughts on this? I would assume if they do it it's alright. I am just curious about leathers oily properties coming in contact with the wood and silver.

Hi John:
I have a case made 30 years ago by Karl Oreck(sp).
He was a famous case maker, and made cases for many people on special order.
Karl used exotic materials, which HE chose for your case.
For my case he chose alligator for the outside, and doe-skin for the inside. The case is a work of art, but there are problems with leather.
Leather is delicate and will tear easily,
Leather has a distinct odor and takes getting use to,
Leather stains easily, so cork grease shows in time,
Leather wears out, making it difficult to repair.
With all this said, I still love my Oreck case. It is beautiful and one of a kind, made by a master of the craft.
If you have the talent and desire to make something both beautiful and useful, then go for it!

The leather cases sound really nice and since jjm has been using his for 30 years there must not be any adverse affect on the keys from the leather tanning process. I myself would probably at least consider chamois for the interior.

I've had a selmer signature case (leather interior) for about three years now. it's beautiful to look at and the interior has worn well. Since you're making your own, you should make sure that there's enough "grip" to ensure that the parts don't shift around (especially barrels). Perhaps this can be achieved by using an injected foam foundation, upon which the leather can be set. In other words, a BAM case with leather.
