how competitve is it to get into the music program at mcgill university's conservatory as a clarinet?

what would a comparable american school be like? In the leagues of Julliard and New England Conservatory or soemthing liek Boston University?

Linus - without wanting to sound overtly rude ...

You question is a little odd, at least to me anyway. Surely the competitiveness of a school is based on the auditionees ... and in which case, how can you compare one school with another unless the exact same group of auditionees audition for differing types of schools and then compare notes.

What, exactly, is the point of this thread? Are you wanting to find "the most difficult" or "the easiest" school to attend? Surely your teacher would be able to give you some prudent advice?

Linus, I completely understand, the "unknown" when enquiring about schools (and your future in music) can be unsettling if not a frightening proposition. Perhaps, you could visit all these institutions' websites to get more information. Maybe, phone their music departments and ask to speak with a clarinet professor or one of their teaching assistants. Check out their alumni section and try to get a hold of a prior graduate willing to speak with you and answer your questions. Best of luck.

Assuming you are a US resident, it is interesting that you are interested in a Canadian school. A recent story on TV news mentioned that with the current favorable (for the US) exchange rate the Canadian schools can be something of a bargain for US residents. Something to keep in mind as you look into this.

It utterly depends on how serious you are about the given program you are studying and also the teacher you really would like to study with...

The entrance audition is 15 minutes and you choose the piece(s) you want to play.

McGill has currently 4 clarinet teachers (in alphabetical order).
Robert Crowley (principal MSO)
Alain Desgagne (associate principal MSO)
Michael Dumouchel (2nd and Eflat MSO)
Abe Kestenberg

They all studied with Marcellus at one point so have a lot of good things to teach you...

You cannot choose your teacher. You usually ask for a specific teacher and you get assigned one of them depending on your wish and their availability. All are great teachers and this not something to worry about.

McGill has one orchestra, one contemporary ensemble and one wind ensemble. There is a 2 round audition (1st round behind screen) every semester to select who will play in which ensemble. The best 3 play in the orchestra, the others get assigned to the 2 other ensembles depending on their ranking.
The audition is pretty competitive there is about 20 clarinet player taking the audition among which a good 10 are in the performance program at the graduate or undergraduate level.

Not every player coming out of McGill gets a job in the music industry, but some are quite successful. One just got a gig for 2nd and Eflat in the Vancouver Symphony, another made it in the National Youth Symphony (Canada) for the second year in a row. Keep in mind that some don't make it at all in the music world. However, if you have the potential and spend the time and effort, McGill has certainly the resources to open a few doors for you.

The advantage is that McGill has numerous programs which will accomodate you if you decide not to pursue a performance degree but want to stay in the music world.

You should spend sometime browsing http://www.mcgill.ca/music/
and see if McGill is a good fit for you. Bare in mind that McGill is a university and not a conservatory so your course load (history, theory, ...) will be significant.

Good luck and all the best to you,
-Sylvain

McGill student indeed, but in computer science.
I just spend lots of time in the music building (my supervisor will probably say too much ;->).
I hope it did not sound too much like an advertisement...

Indeed,
I was called to sub in the orchestra for the 2nd clarinet for Mozart's requiem and I had the time of my life!

There are no clarinets in the Mozart Requiem.....at least if you are true to the score.

Basset horns!

I'm afraid we weren't true to the score...
Unfortunately, basset horns are not readily available at McGill...
