So I have decided to do something different for chamber this year so I have decided to do a clarinet quintet. What music is out there for this ensemble? I know about the Mozart Clarinet quintet but is there really anything else for this ensemble? Thanks in advance, James

there's heaps of music- some of it brilliant and much of it "so-so"... the sites that GBK mentions will be a great help. If you want something a little different- you could look for "clarinet quartet" music (clarinet and 3 strings).... good stuff by Hummel, Crussel and Mozart arrangements to start with....
another idea that might interest you- the Johann Stamitz clarinet concerto actually works really well with a Quartet. There are suposed to be 2 horns in it, but you can leave these out with no problems. If you add a few people and play it with a really small orchestra (say, one cello, one bass, two violas and 4 or 6 violins) then your problems are compounded- more people to organise AND they had better play in tune (the 2 violins in a quartet playing out of tune with each other sounds bad but is not so hard to fix, 2 or 3 violins on the same part playing out of tune with each other sounds much worse... once the sections gets bigger however it seems to be less noticable, but in the small section everybody is very exposed).
Just an idea
of course the Mozart Quintet is a brilliant work

Maybe it's been a long day, but I can't figure out why both the Brahms Quintet and Trio are listed in the database under Clarinet in Bb- the last time I performed them, it was on the A clarinet.
James, I've heard the Brahms Clarinet Quintet referred to as the best piece of chamber music that Brahms ever wrote- and it's gorgeous. Check it out.
If you're thinking of something a little more soloistic, the Weber Quintet is a lot of fun.

Dito for the Weber, it is true that it sounds like a "concerto for clarinet and string quartet"! You might want to check the Intro, theme & variations op. posth. by Weber too. This has been written for a quintett configuration too and some musicologists think it was actually written to be part of the Grand Quintett op. 34, this piece is good fun too, some variations are pretty challenging!
And I agree for the Brahms being one of the best piece ever written for chamber music.

Do check out the Krehl. The dots are available (Amadeus I think) and there is a CD of it. Also a single movement Fantasy by Howells. There is so much excellent stuff for this combination.

The Weber Quintet's a cracker. As usual, he writes good tunes that fit exactly right on a clarinet, are not monsterously difficult, yet make you sound like you know what you're doing.

imho, this genre begins and ends with the Brahms quintet, one of the greatest pieces of chamber music...very challenging, very rewarding!

Brahms was no innovator, he made no new inroads into the romantic genre, he did not add any quirky you "things" to the romantic harmony pallete (unlike Wagner for example) but he did compose lovely melodies AND, if it wasn't for him, Dvorak would probably have just remained in the Provisional Theatre orchestra and playing organ for some crappy suburban Czech church.

Well....if you really want to try something different:
Hindemith - Quintet for Clarinet & Strings (last movement is a retrograde of the first movement and the third movement is scored for Eb clarinet)
Tower - Turning Points (hope you have a quartet that can count...)
Magnus Lindberg - Clarinet Quintet (good luck!)
BTW, for some reason both the Brahms Trio, Op. 114 and Quintet, Op. 115 are listed under "Bb Clarinet" in the database. Of course, they are both for clarinet in A.
