Well, there exist different categories of "children clarinets" [Kinderklarinette(n)] in Germany.

The more complex ones are just clarinets pitched in C, adjusted (hole positions, total weight) to childrens hands, usually played with (german) Bb clarinet reeds (and mouthpieces) and a simplified german ("albert") system (e.g. 14 keys).
[search the C-Klasse at <a href=http://www.blasmusik.de/kreul/>Hans KREUL</a>

The low end are like chalumeaux with Bb clarinet mouthpiece, up to 3 keys, approx. the size of a soprano recorder, approx. 2 octaves range, but not chromatic, fingering similar to a recorder.

The best instrument I know is the "Kinderklarinette C1" by Guntram Wolf (Im Ziegelwinkel 13, 96817 Kronach, Germany, Tel. +49 9261 4207, Fax. +49 9261 52782). 3 keys, and some double finger holes offer together with a narrow bore (compared to Bb and Eb clarinets) and a bell (just in shape, not a separate joint) a full chromatic range in chalumeau and clarion register (2+2/3 octaves). Fingering (and size) is quite similar to soprano recorder. You can also see it as an "clarinet pitched in high G", if you compare the fingering with the clarinet. Of course, it is played with a (german) Bb clarinet reed, too (special mouthpiece due to the bore diameter). Only the reed's "back end" has to be shortened, which is no problem at all. (Due to the size, there's the speeker key quite far up.)
I remember a price below $300 (incl. 16 % sales tax, in Germany)

I hope, this information is what you looked for

Follow the resources link to the Woodwind & Brasswind on-line catalog. They have a kinder clarinet in Eb based on the standard Boehm fingering system for $250.

Back in the early 60's, when I was in 8th grage, we had a German exchange student in our band. She had a "C" clarinet with boeme system but slightly smaller than a "Bb'. I remember on the bell it said Gemacht en Deutchland. She had been playing it since she was 6. She was also far more advanced than the rest of us. Our band directir took good advantage of this by providibg us with a concert band arrangment of some Ocktoberfest musik featuring a clarinet solo ot the klarinet polka. She tore it up! WE won our conpetition.

I have a Kinderclarinet with a single digit serial number - Woodwind Company told me that it was the first one they had sold. I bought it back in 1994 when my daughter was 4. It's a great Eb clarinet - very little if any resistance, unlike the Eb clarinets. Missing doubled side keys, but I can still play Daphnis on it.
