 Willem Mengelberg Brahms interpretations
Author: d dow

Dear BB freinds;

A new set of recordings of Brahms symphonies(except 1) is available on Naxos with the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in Syphonies 3 4 and 2-- spread over two discs> I got these rare recordings and didn't know what to expect.
I would say any serious musician should give them a listen.

In spite of the old mono sound these are fantastic interpretations of these often poorly played works.

As a background Mengelberg was also a conductor of the New York Phil in the 20s.

Also check out Weingartner/LSO 1939 Brahms First on Iron Needle label featuring George Garside on clarinet (probably). Very good. Also the complete Brahms Symphs live 1952 in London with Toscanini and the Philharmonia (Testamnet label), with Thurston on clarinet, also extremely good.
