 Selmer "Gold seal" Clarinets
Author: Gordon

I have come across a pair of selmer gold seal clarinets. They seem to be of an exceptional quality, but fairly old.I can't seem to find out anything about their pedegree. They dont seem to have a serial # or any other markings other than "selmer gold seal london" on each joint. They seem to have similar qualities (sound and playing) to old R-13s. Can anyone help?

I just thought I would reply to this although I cant help.

I had a Selmer Gols Seal clarinet when I was about twenty, I was a beginner then, but what I do remember about it was it had a sort of round Gold Medallion on the bell

I am a long-time Selmer [and LeBlanc] cl player/devotee, but had not heard of a "Gold Seal" model. At least some of their 1950's clarinets did have a "circular" logo in gold on bells and maybe elsewhere, so perhaps this is what you are referring to. Look on the back/bottom of the upper and lower joints for serial numbers, the cls with P and Q #'s were the Centered Tone models which [for me] are among the best they have made. Luck, Don

Don Berger,
I use a Selmer Centeredtone, I looked for a good one for years and it lived up to its reputation and some when I got it, I am also at the moment using an old Selmer metal clarinet, both have their respective virtues, you know how good the Centeretone is but the metal one loses something in the broadness of tone, particularly in the chalamaue, but gains in clarity and the top notes are a doddle to get no trouble at all and smack in tune, but if I could only have one clarinet to play I dont have to tell you which one it would be!

By the way I am a jazz musician.

Sounds GREAT, MCLGIG, have never played on a metal Selmer, but would still love to. Yes, the altissimo is all-important for "outstanding" Dixie and big-band cl'ists, wish I had found such back in "my good ole days"!! I do like the CT chalameau, softly, in church!! now. Don
