Is there any cl tutorials with CD?
Author: Hiroshi

Recently I obtained Aruturo Sandoval's trumpet tutorials book-1 published by Hal-Leonard co. It consists of three books, beginning, intermediate, and advanced and each includes a CD in which Sandoval himself shows how to practice what he writes in the book.I really thought this is the very right thing to do in this time of audio development. (I am relieved to find even Sandoval's lowest F sounds like a cow.) It is a dream of novices to have an individual teaching from such a famous artist, but it is not realistic. This trial is one very good solution.

I wondered whether any clarinet tutorial like this exists.
Does anyone know any?

Hiroshi,
Not quite, at least none I know of. There is the Larry Combs orchestral excerpts CD, though.

I found a series of clarinet books that come with CD's but they are not tutorials. I've got two, "Guest Spot" Blues and Jazz playalong for Clarinet by Wise Publications. The CD has all of the tracks played through with accompaniment on piano which you can play along with and then just the piano accompaniment for when you feel more confident about tackling the pieces yourself. They are great fun for myself and my students. The Jazz book is a bit more challenging but I just love the Blues book.

I can remember encountering in a library an edition by John Cipolla, of the Baermann method, part III. I believe it was called ´The virtuoso Clarinettist´, or something to that effect. It came with a CD, with a piano accompaniment version of the etudes, and a version with piano + Cipolla playing the etudes on clarinet.
According to the back cover, there was a second book as well, further into the Baermann method. I don´t know if it covers both part IV + V, or a selection from them.

Bart,
John Cipolla's email is johncip@mindspring.com, why don't you email him and ask him about the works in question and report back to us?

There aren't really any etudes in Baermann III, just exercises. It was probably part II. I once had a copy of the piano part to this but loaned it to a pianist and never saw it again.

Pianists are bad about that. In junior high i had to buy new copies of several solos.. and my pianist at college now still has my Poulenc and Brahms sonatas. My flute teacher's duo partner has had tons of her scores at his house for a year.

I received an e-mail from John Cipolla´s about his Baermann Method studies, see below:

Hi Bart,

Thanks for your interest. Hope this clears things up. There are two albums, The Virtuoso
Clarinetist (Baermann part 2) and The Art of Clarinet (Baermann part 4). These are published
by Music Minus One and each have 4 CD's containing two versions of each piece, one with the
clarinet and piano and one with just the piano. Each volume also contains a book with the
music for each selection and a mini lesson for each etude discussing the specific problems of
each etude as well as general tips about clarinet playing. The piano accompaniments were
done on a sequencing program and a Macintosh computer. They were done intentionally like
this so the student could have a very steady tempo to follow as well as exact 440 pitch.

I think they sell for $39.95 each.

Keep me posted. Hope that helps. By the way I've been getting nice feedback from people
about them. Julie DeRoche of the the International Clarinet Association told me that she
practices with them herself.

All the best

John Cipolla

I found the Music Minus One site, John Cipolla´s books sell for USD 29,95 each instead of 39,95 as stated in the previous posting.
