"yes, I know....the value is in the act of transcribing them yourself..."

In my experience this is really true. I think I got 100 times more out of lifting solos off records than just reading them.

And the ones better off for it before it was published and had no choice? v/r

I think that the main advantage is that you can really get into the style of a specific player by lifing solos from records. There are so many details that you've got to listen for- exactly where he plays the time, his sound, pitch, dynamics, etc. Most of this can't be notated, so just reading from an omnibook is only a fraction of the experience.

When Ornette Coleman heard that people were writing down his solos on manuscript paper, he actually vomited!

Frank- sorry we're not answering your question! But unless you have some other reason, don't bother buying transcribed solos.

Absolutely.
A huge part of playing jazz is training your ears and transcribing solos is a great way of doing just that.
Buying transcribed solos means that the work has allready been done for you and you will lose out, having not done them yourself.
Save your money and buy more records instead!

There's a bunch of reasons to buy transcribed solos. Learning jazz isn't one of them. Playing gigs is one, though. Back in my "professional" jazz days we used them to play gigs where we were expected to play covers of standards and really didn't have the time (or inclination - some of the "standards" are pretty crappy jazz) to transcriobe them ourselves - and people expected letter-perfect covers, too.

Although I belive in the fortitude of lifting solos by ear, there is no reason to avoid buying a book of solos. To say that you would get nothing out of it would be a false statement. It is worth your while to listen feverishly to the player you want to revive ideas from, and visualize how they do what they do. Many people learn differently, so there could be a huge benefit for you if you look at a WELL crafted transcription. Just don't forget that although it may be in a book, and sell a few thousand copies, it may not contain anything near the whole truth. That comes from meticulous attention to finding differences of harmonic/rhythmic/ and articulative process "with/against" the said transcription. Learning some thing is always better than not learning at all. The only point that matters to the listener/performer is to discern which is right, under any available means necessary. Good luck, and happy music making! Phil

Frank,

I will transcribe anything you want for $120/hour. A three minute solo might take a couple hours or so. (Manager of board: Sorry if this message violates any rule on merchandising).

Better to ask forgiveness rather than permission, eh???

If anyone takes you up on the $120.00 hour - tell 'em I'll do it for $119.95/hr.
