Does anyone know of a transcription of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings for clarinet choir (1, 2, 3 Bb; Eb Alto; and Bb Bass)?

There was an arrangement done for clarinet choir by Lucien Cailliet, (Schirmer 1963).

It was scored for Eb clarinet, Bb Clarinet 1,2,3, Alto clarinet, Bass clarinet, Eb Contrabass clarinet, and Bb Contrabass clarinet...GBK

There have been several recordings of this arrangement - One was with the Kalmen Opperman clarinet choir...GBK

There's another Clarinet Choir out there? And our group has all those instruments! We should look into this arrangement.

Didn't the Cailliet also have two Ab sopranino parts as well? I once heard a recording and at the climax it sounded like three cats screaming for dear life.

The Opperman Clarinet Choir's amazing recording of the Barber Adagio has been on a couple of the Stoltzman CDs, including the one called "Adagio." Dennis Smylie plays a Beuscher (Bundy stencil) Eb contra extensively reworked by Kalmen Opperman. The combination of a great player and a great instrument gives contra tone like you've never heard anywhere else. It's one of those recordings everyone simply must hear.

Best regards.

I have a CD called "Barber's Adagio" it features 'that' song performed by the strings of Boston Symphony, flute by James Gallway, the Canadian Brass, The Choir of Trinity College, Stoltzman & the Kalman Opperman Cl.Choir, Tokyo String Quartet, organ, and the smithsonian chamber players. Its interesting to hear the same song played so many different styles and by differet instruments, combination of instruments and voices.

Brenda - one of these days I'd LOVE to hear the four fantasy pieces a certain Aussie composed for your group (I think) - he will remain namless.

Kalmen Opperman makes a great reed knife as well and I am definitely not letting go of mine....as for the recording I am going to look it up.

Thanks to all of you for you quick and interesting responses. We are 7 to 8 amateurs here in north Texas. We are all members of a community wind band of approx. 80 players. You probably would agree that we play college freshman level - you know, not 1 o'clock lab band, more like 4:30 ... But, we do have a lot of good times. The clarinet choir is a breakout group from the larger ensemble. We are touring our local area (senior centers, shopping malls, public schools, etc.) just for the fun of it for the time being. Do any of you have any experience doing the sort of thing?

BTW, I have a wonderful clarinet mentor: Prof. Roger Garrett at Illinois Weslyan Univ. Check out http://sun.iwu.edu/~rgarrett/.

Thanks again for allowing me to be part of your BB.
