Ben Webster's tone on tenor sax (on the tune That's All) is truly remarkable? How does he get his vibrato? How can one do this on clarinet?

Ben Webster was an incredible lyrical genius with an amazing amount of control and soul. He had that beautiful and unique sound particularly evident on countless ballads. Your question of how to play like that on clarinet reminds me of that battered old joke in which
a lost seeker on a Manhattan street corner poses the question to a passing stranger: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" The answer, of course, is "PRACTICE!" (OK OK...after a well placed rim shot you can hit me with a well placed gun shot!) Seriously, though, the question of translating that Webster sound to clarinet brings to mind the great Tony Scott. Tony was one of the very few modern jazz clarinetists to emerge from the bebop era. Webster personally took Scott under his wing at those legendary after hours Minton's jam sessions and to this day you can hear Webster's influence on Tony's sound (especially in his more introspective work). Tony Scott left the States back in the sixties and has been living in Italy for the past several decades. I recently discovered an excellent and very extensive official Tony Scott website worth checking out. The URL is http://www.tonyscott.it/home.htm
