sorry this is off topic but you guys were the only ones i knew to ask....
i brought my keyboard to the local music store to be repaired. the guy didnt know how much it would cost becuz he didnt know what was wrong - but he said i could put a maximum amount that i would be willing to pay. so i said no more than $80. i really couldnt afford that much - but, figured i'd find a way if it was 'that' much. for some reason i didnt think it would be that much. he said they would call me.
i waited 3 weeks and no call. well i didnt want to be pushy, but i called to find out the status. he said he would talk to the repair guy and to call back. i decided to give them a little more time and another week passed. then i happened to be in the area and stopped in to find out what was going on. he said he didnt know and there was nothing he could do becuz it was sunday. he could tell i was irritated and ended up calling the repairman. the guy said he hadnt gotten to it yet and to call back on tuesday.
so today i get a msg from the music store telling me the keyboard is all set and that the bill came to $85. they said, there is a memo that says no more than 80 but sorry it came out to 85.
okay - i KNOW , whats five bucks right? i can barely find the money to pay the $80 -actually im gonna have to give him 40 and then go back with another 40. i dont know where im even goin to get 5 xtra bucks.
its just that on my receipt it says - and i have a copy of it, no more than 80 and its more a matter of priciple to me. why set a maximum if theyre just going to go over it.
or should i not say anything - pay the 85 bucks and then just dont do business there. i dont want to be a jerk either - but, i just dont think thats fair. even if it is only 5 bucks.
what to you guys think - am i just being a jerk about this?

I don't think you are being a jerk but hindsight says maybe you shouldn't have put the original number on the job in the first place. If it were me and the keyboard works now I'd pay it and enjoy it.

Not knowing where you are, this may be meaningless... but in California, a repair facility can raise their charges by no more than ten percent without first getting your approval to hit you for more money. So where I am, no one would give a second thought to an $85 charge after seeing an $80 estimate on the ticket. I basically agree with Bob. Scare up the extra five bucks somewhere, pay the charges, and enjoy your keyboard. Sure, I'd be irritated too, but just go beyond that and don't let it spoil anything.
Regards,
John

yeah - you guys are right. i was just irritated that it took so long and then to hear -sorry it went over the max.
i just have in my mind that they saw the max at 80 and said whats another 5 bucks. and if i had set the max at 50, maybe the bill would had only been 55 - ya know what i mean. like they wanted to see how much i was willing to pay.
the guy said it probably needed a new battery which would cost between 50-80 and i should had set the max at 50, but i wanted so bad for it to be fixed becuz im giving it to a friend who was a piano major and has been without for years and years now. and i just wanted to bring music back into her life. it would make her so happy. i said i would find the 80 dollars somewhere so she could have this, so whats another $5. i think the joy she would get from having it would be worth the xtra 5 bucks.
i should had thot about this more before bothering you guys with this - it was kinda in the heat of the moment.
thanks jl

It's no bother, Janlynn. Just wish there was something could be done about it. However, it's done -- so please... don't 'should' on yourself. Enjoy your friend's pleasure and never, ever go back to that store again.

Sad thing is........I did the same thing, but in the opposite direction. Selling my first used car.
The man looked at the car and asked how much I could go Down on the price. I (looking back now, I could scream!) went down to $500!!! It was a low price to begin with.
Now this was 10 years ago, and I have LEARNED a lesson for sure.
Jannlynn, I think under that pressure I too would have bid a too high price for something THEY should have looked at first and THEN given YOU an estimate. I bet they were banking on that.
Check this for a lesson learned.

Making mistakes can be caused by lack of experience.
Good experience can be gained by making mistakes.
Isn't it good to be alive?
The only people who make no mistakes are dead people.
