I've been very impressed by Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto(performed by Woody Herman). Any other suggested performances of this piece? Where can I get a copy of the music? Thanks!

I enjoy John Bruce Yeh's recording of the Concerto.

Woody Herman was, of course, primarily a jazz player, and he made his Ebony Concerto recording with his own band using a jazz tone and rhythm. It's the must-have version. John Bruce Yeh can do anything, and I agree with Mark that his recording is very fine, from a player who comes from a primarily classical background. Stoltzman combines both, and I like his version.

Avoid the European players, who haven't got a clue.

Best regards.

Boosey & Hawkes has the copyright. They list it as rental only. You can buy a study score from Sheet Music Plus. While this doesn't prove anything, I have never seen a piano reduction (I suspect it wouldn't work very well) or the solo part available for separate purchase. You could try contacting Boosey directly for the solo part or a good music store such as Eble Music.

Best regards,
jnk

yes, well - I'd like to hear you tell Sabine Meyer that.

diz: Might that turn out to be something like telling Buzz Aldrin he never went to the Moon?

Even as a European, I must admit that when comparing the version by Meyer and the one by Benny Goodman (Stravinsky directing), Sabine comparitively doesn't have a clue. That doesn't prove however that European players in general won't be able to play it well.

Try Michel Arrignon on Dg with Boulez and Ensemble Incontemporain for a very "definitive version".

As most of you may know, there is a recording called:
"Benny Goodman Collector's edition"
CBS Records Masterworks, MK42227.
It contains:
Bernstein, Prelude Fugue and Riffs.
Copland, Clarinet Concerto.
Stravinsky, Ebony Concerto.
Gould, Derivations for clarinet and band.
Bartok, Contrasts.

All those pieces were written either for B. Goodman or W. Herman, and all of them on the recording are conducted by the composer. It is a "must have". Some might argue that the performances are not flawless, but the spirit of each piece and ideas of the composer are conveyed
perfectly.

Now, I am very curious about the Michel Arrignon recording...
