 bass clarinet fingerings
Author: Geoff Illing

I have recently purchased a Buffet bass clarinet. I'm an amateur player, and one of the things that I most enjoy is playing in small groups. Typically a quartet. The addition of the bass instrument makes the balance much better. Working out the fingerings for the notes down to the low C was not too difficult, but the altissimo is a little harder. At first I could manage only up to an Eb using the standard clarinet fingerings. Then I discovered the extra small hole for the left hand little finger, and I have discovered some fingerings for higher notes. Looking on this BB I notice that even for the normal clarinet the fingering charts stop at F or G. And I can't find fingering charts for the bass clarinet. Where should I look? Are they available on the internet, or should I be looking in books or tutors ?

TIA

Thanks Ben - just what I wanted. Though I think I much prefer the sound of the low C to that of the high C.

Also, check your case. New Buffet bass clarinets come with a fingering chart from C to shining C.

There are several books with bass clarinet fingers in them. Check your local University that has a good music dept. High C# thumb and two lower side keys, D over blow opened G with just the register key, no thumb key, Eb, over blow throat G#, E over blow throat A, F add the register key, G add the lower side key, over blowing the Bb above the staff). If you keep overblowing that fingering you will get even higher overtones. Also the regular clarinet fingers work but from Eb to G but you must use the half hole. C# and D you could play with or without the half hole. All opened is a bit freer, less resistanct. Just me

Geoff,

You will find a very extensive list of altissimo register fingerings in "New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet" (Novelles techniques de la Clarinette Basse) by Henri Bok published by Salabert Editions. It provides many fingerings (for Selmer & Buffet instruments) going well beyond high C and includes suggestions for embouchure pressure and lip positions for obtaining the various pitches. It also contains fingerings for trills, tremolos, and extended techniques such as multiphonics, microtones, etc. A cassette can also be purchased with the book.

Have fun!

Thanks to everybody for the suggestions. I'm afraid that looking in the case was no good: I bought the instrument second hand, and if there ever was a list of fingerings, it wasn't there when I got it. But I can't complain as the instrument is wonderful and I got it at less than half new price.

The site suggested by "Big Ben" gave me a good list of fingerings. It was also really interesting to compare the number of altissimo fingerings for different instruments. I was amazed at the number of different fingerings for the sax. As only an occasional sax player, I had always given up at F#.

Thanks to everybody.

Geoff
