No doubt, many readers of this board were moved as I was by this mornings nationally televised ceremonies commemorating the terrible event our nation suffered last Sept 11. I would only add my personal appreciation and thanks for the musicians who performed live from "ground zero" and played so muscially under less that favorable conditions. I recognized Yo Yo Ma at the beginning, but I am hoping that some of our NYC "Sneezers" (Hat, John M) could supply the names of the others. Their performance efforts made me proud to be called a musician, and, IMHO, all of us--amature or professional--should share that pride.

I heard part of Yo-Yo Ma on NPR playing in the background as they read the victims' names. I recognized that he was playing from Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites.

Broadway Community Marks 9/11 With Vigil, Dimmed Marquees and Curtain Speeches

Members of the Broadway community will mark the anniversary of 9/11 with a special vigil on Sept. 11.
The vigil, which is scheduled to begin in Duffy Square at 6:30 PM, will feature cast and crew members from those Broadway shows that will be offering performances on Sept. 11 as well as other members of the Broadway community. Following the vigil, marquee lights of all performing shows will be dimmed at 8 PM.
Although many Broadway shows have canceled performances for Sept. 11, a few are still offering shows. Those productions will offer special curtain speeches commemorating 9/11 either at the beginning or end of the show. Shows offering performances on Sept. 11 include The Boys From Syracuse, The Graduate (evening only), Hairspray, Metamorphoses, The Producers, Proof, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Dick Scanlan (book and lyrics) and Jeanine Tesori (music) will offer a curtain speech prior to both the matinee and evening performances of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Brad Oscar, star of The Producers, will speak at the conclusion of the Mel Brooks musical. His speech will be followed by the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Before the evening performance of The Graduate, Kathleen Turner will speak, and at the conclusion of Hairspray, Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein will offer a few words. That will be followed by a moment of silence and a performance of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." David Rockwell, Hairspray's scenic designer, has reconfigured the show's wall of lights to display the American flag.
Jonathan Dokuchitz and Jackée Harry, stars of The Boys From Syracuse, will speak prior to the beginning of their show; a speech will also precede today's performance of Proof. A moment of silence prior to Metamorphoses will be followed by a speech from actor Anjoli Bhimani. Half the box-office proceeds from both Sept. 11 performances of Metamorphoses will be donated to the NY Firefighters Sept. 11 Relief Fund.

I'm not performing, but I'm a New Yorker. I was across the street from the World Trade Center when the second plane hit. The best I can do today is get through it.
