 Cane Blend reed
Author: Bob

I recently acquired an older Bb and on the wood mouthpiece was attached a whitish colored reed with the notation "1 1/2 Cane Blend" on it...nothing else. The tip area looks like a cane reed when held to the light but the flat side has vertical indented lines(10 or 12) in the vibrating area and obvious plastic molding knockout pin indentations in the lower area. It looks like old celluloid plastic. Anyone ever seen these or know anything about them.

Sorry not to answer your question directly but -I have not seen the reed to which you describe but B & G has a new reed out, the S-2000 that is a blend of cane and plastic. I had the chance to try some in February and the seemed pretty good on my regular MP. The advertising indicates that they last up to 10 times as long as natural cane but I can not vouch for the longevity. WW&BW sells them for U.S.$10 in case anyone is interested in trying them. I myself have a new MP that works well with Legere reeds but a good cane reed (if one can find them nowadays) is my choice for performance work. Everyone to their own devices and setups are my thoughts on the often voiced opinions on reeds.

Thanks Doc. I don't think this is a recent manufacture but, rather, an early experiment with celluloid from the early 1900s....just a hunch. There is no manufacturer's logo on it.
