Did his old teacher who moved to New York recommend someone?
And you have one of the best in the country at USC--Yehuda Gilad. You should be able to get some suggestions from the clarinet department there.

Mr. Gilad is very good but also very expensive--perhaps one of his graduate students is also a possibility for an 8th grader at least, or you can also call the music depts of the major universities around LA (there are lots) for either full-time faculty, adjuct, or other grad student teachers.

Try Jim Kanter. He's one of the best players out there.

In the South Bay area, you might talk to Richard Babcock, the head of the music department at Chadwick School and a fine clarinet player. I don't believe that the other fine players mentioned above live in the South Bay and I doubt if you wish to drive to Woodland Hills or some other remote location once a week for lessons. While I don't personally know Dane Teter's playing, I know that he leads the symphonic orchestra at El Camino College and is a clarinet player. There is a lady teacher at Cal State Dominguez that teaches clarinet but I don't recall her name. Richard Firth is a local saxophone and clarinet player that teaches many students at Marshall Music. While I don't teach now, I would be pleased to offer assistance or commentary as I live in South Torrance. Good luck!

Actually, last I heard Jim Kanter wasn't teaching; his wife (Debbie) does teach (again, last I heard). You might be able to get a hold of her through Biola Univ. where she has been on faculty, (562) 903-6000 (this is the no. for the Biola switchboard; ask for the music dept.) if you are interested. She also is good.
