I've been listening to Woody Herman and The Sauter Finegan Orchestra. Why can't today's popular music achieve such a high level of brilliance? Any comments re Woody Herman's techniques/methods and the brilliant compositions of Sauter-Finegan?Thanks!!!

Doodles Weaver: "Say, what ever happened to Schlaughter Finegan?"

Spike Jones: "I dunno, but I wish he'd send my arrangements back."

Seriously, when WH and SF were at their peak, they were the best of popular music. They got the best talent. There are great big bands today, but most young pop musicians go to current music -- furstunkener rock, I say, but that's where the audience and the money are.
