 Buying a clarinet for student
Author: Jan

Does anyone have any recommendations for a new clarinet for a student who has been playing for 3 years and outgrown her beginner Bundy. How about the Buffet Ell. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The E11 is a good quality instrument. Depending on the student's financial situation and seriousness about clarinet, you may even want to encourage the E12 or the E13. The wood seems to be much better quality in the 12 and 13.

I have had students go to the E11 and then want to replace with an R13 within a year or two. Maybe going higher quality like E12 or E13 would stave that desire off for a little longer? Just thinking of the parents checkbook...

Of course, any of the E models are going to be a huge improvement over a beginner Bundy. Just make sure that your student steps up to a better mouthpiece at the same time. I always suggest B45 but I have had some good luck with Hite mouthpieces too.

A number of us on the BBoard, when asked, will suggest looking at new [or lightly used] clarinets, "intermediates" [as well as "student" and "pro"] made by the "big Four", Selmer, LeBlanc, Yamaha and Buffet [B & H], all of whom are good and reputable makers. So, I'd suggest a bit of looking/playing/pricing,to satisfy the student's and teacher's desires for a long-time instrument. Don

And, of course, the ruling factor is: Peer Preasure

Bob Arney - you are so right on this. Might I recommend you just go out and purchase an R-13 - everyone else does.
