 Squeaking in the Chalumeau
Author: Nick
Date:   2002-09-05 02:41

Every time I play, I hear this unstable sound coming from my C and D in the lowest register of the clarinet. If I play on it too loudly, or even just normally, it sort of "rings" and then jumps a 12th in pitch.

Is this a problem with my embouchure or fingering? My teacher just thinks my fingering is slipping, but it happens almost every time I hit those notes. He also checked the joint strength and they were fine.

What's causing this? Is it something I'm doing wrong or is it just because I'm using a student instrument? (It's the cheapest wooden clarinet the local music store carries)

The fact that it's a student clarinet SHOULD have absolutely NO bearing on this.

Nick
You've completely disreharded what your techer has said. Listen, check, and do what he/she suggests, as he/she's prbably right.

If its not a fingering problen, such as barely touching the G# key with a knuckle, it might be a "too-tight" adjustment of that set screw. OR, more likely a bad pad on a higher-up key, the register key or a trill key or the A - G# combination. Have a tech look at it, sounds quite minor to me. Don

I thought "Squeaking in the Chalumeau" was a big band hit from the 40s.

Oh, wait. Maybe it was "Stomping at the Savoy."

Well done, Don. I considered "Send[ing] in the Clowns" since I have a great bass cl part in our band's arrangement, maybe the "hair washing" song from So. Pacific which we also will play tonite! By "quite minor" above, I meant analysis/solution. Don

I have had this problem on my Eb (while its a bit smaller but still!) when I was playing the solo part to the famed Symphonie Fantastique. What I found out was causing it was my finger just tapping the alternate Bb key between the second and third tone holes. I don't know how this could happen on a Bb, but I guess it could be possible!
