Thanks, jbutler. It's not expensive, thank goodness - about $100 for a 40Gb 7200 RPM ATA-100 nowadays. The drive is covered under warrantee but I'll need to get another one right away to replace the failed one, then I'll have a "spare" drive (a new backup drive to replace one of the ancient 10Gb drives running on the original "sneezy" box that's having occasional glitches).
This is not a "pledge drive" by any means - I can afford the drive - but if anyone wants to help out they're always welcome!
