Lionel Hampton, the vibraphone virtuoso and standout showman whose six-decade career ranked him among the greatest names in jazz history, died today at 94.
Our prayers go with him.

I heard that too, today on NPR. His teaming with Benny Goodman was the first desegregated jazz band. We just lost another great one.

I just got the most wonderful CD last week of Lionel and Buddy de Franco which reissued from 1954.

I have been lucky enough to see him perform in person 4 times, the first time was 32 years ago when he was a young 62. What a showman! His mallets were just a blur, and his smile like sunshine!

We payed "A Tribute to Lionel" in community band this spring and summer. In the spring concert we had a guest vibraphone soloist. This summer, our first chair played the solo from an alternate solo written for clarinet that came with the score. Lionel Hampton was a great musician who will be missed.
