does anyone know of any "good" double concertos? 2 clarinets or clarinet and another instrument- some that have orchestra parts that can be rented with some ease and that are at least virtuosic, or of high quality?

I believe the Mendelssohn Concertpiece #1 and the Mendelssohn Concertpiece #2 are both available in arrangemens for orchestra and 2 clarinets. Although the second part was for a basset horn in F, these have been arranged for two clarinets.
And if played at tempo do require virtuosity.

Krommer wrote an excellent concerto for two clarinets. Both parts are equally hard so you need two strong clarinetists to play this piece. I've heard this on played before ( and i'm working on it myself) so I know that it's definetely a crowd pleaser.

yes, but i was wondering which jason was referring to that he was working on. does anyone know if the ponchielli il covegnio has orchestral parts? i only know of the piano accpt.

Have you heard Bruch's concerto for clarinet & viola? It was recored on the Hyperion label by Thea King. This disc also has both of the Mendelssohn concertpieces, with Georgina Dobree on basset horn.

yes, i have- i think i liked it, but it didn't really blow me away, though i can't say it doesn't have that potential. i was looking really for something more virtuosic- perhaps the mendelssohn- i'm not sure. strauss is out because faculty just performed that here a couple of years ago. is anyone very familiar with the krommer or crusell doubles?

played one of the krommer double concerto's last year playing the 1st part then the year before playing the second, have to get back to you on the opus number but it was really fun ...... a very good piece but not amazingly showy

Angella- The double concerto that i was refering to was the opus 35. As Col said earlier, it's not an amazingly showy piece but it is fun to play and to listen to.

There is also the Hoffmeister Concerto(a contemporary of Mozart - actually published some of Mozart's works if I remember correctly) for two clarinets. Musica Rara lists both a piano reduction and orchestra parts as available.

Actually, he wrote two concerti for 1 clarinet and 3 concerti for 2 clarinets. The Op. 35 double concerto is the most often played and recorded (i have found). I DO have a recording of Dieter Klöcker and Waldemar Wandel doing both as well as his Concertino Italien (the third "concerto" written for Müller in 1809). the Op. 35 was 1802, and the Op. 91 was 1818.
