Is anyone familiar with this work? I know it is a transcription from the violin sonata and was wondering what people thought. I am considering it as a recital piece.
Thanks,
Rob

It's a pretty tough work. I've never played it, but I have taught it. It is also a pretty terrific piece. I am planning on performing it for my next recital. Good luck.

A piece, that due to Copland's rethinking and rewriting, actually works better on clarinet than the originally intended violin. It is not merely just a transcription, but rather a work which was redone with the clarinet in mind...GBK

Larry Combs has an excellant CD, THE AMERICAN CLARINETIST, which includes this work, as well as "Benny's Gig", a set of clarinet and bass duets dedicated to the great Benny Goodman.

William, thank you for the kind reminder. I revisited my copy of the Combs rendition and indeed relished his fine offering of this most important piece and contribution to the literture. v/r KEN

Victoria Soames has also recorded the transcription. It's on one of the very first Clarinet Classics issues. I slightly prefer the Combs recording, but both are good.
Best regards.
