Let me just take this oppurtunity to tell the clarinet world how beautiful the openining of Copland's Clarinet Concerto is... it never ceases to amaze me at how beautiful and lyrical this opening is... i haven't been able to go past the 1st part cause i always find myself starting the concerto over just to hear the lyricism... so beautiful! Thank You for allowing me an oppurtunity to rave!

It is a reality that at least once, every day, someone "discovers" the beauty of the Grand Canyon or the Rockie Mts. for the first time. You have discovered what many of us already have known for a long time--but thanks, anyway, for the report. Enjoy the opening--it is beautiful--but try to learn to appreciate the remaining sections as well. BTW, ever hear of Mozart?????

Keil...There is a very informative Master Class by Michael Webster on the Copland Concerto in Volume 28 Number 1 of <i>The Clarinet</i>.
There is some helpful interpretive advice as well as a few interesting fingering suggestions. I very much like his fingering ideas.

Hi Keil:
It was a thrill for me, in the early 1980's, to record the Copland Concerto with Aaron Copland conducting.
I was hired to do, what sounded like, a simple film score in NYC at the old Columbia Studios.
When I found out, two days before the date, that Copland was conducting his own Concerto and I was the clarinet soloist, I almost died!
Working like mad, I showed up, and in two 3-hour recording sessions, we had it. Copland was pleased and signed my solo clarinet part, the producers seemed happy, and I was left in a state of shock and joy.
The movie was finally released as "Love and Money", it didn't do well at the box office, but years later went to video.
I purchased a copy for a keepsake, and it's really pretty good.
Wish I'd had more time with Copland to do a CD, and learn more from him about the Concerto. It's just a wonderful memory.
He was quite a guy! Thanks Aaron.

John, who starred in the movie "Love and Money"? I never heard of it and like to pick up a VHS/DVD copy of it and hopefully enjoy a snippet of your recording.

For those (in the US) who might get "Classic Arts Showcase" on their cable or a PBS affiliate or a college station, The andante movement of this is featured in the current cycle with Stoltzman on the solo and Michael Tilson Thomas conducting.
(Also in the cycle is a 1961 film of a performance of Rhapsody in Blue with Paul Whiteman conducting.)

Thanks for the easy find on my movie, "Love & Money".
Ken, please be warned, it's not a very good film, so don't run out and buy it. It may be available at a vintage video rental place in your area.
I purchased my copy on eBay a few years ago. I don't remember if I received a mention in the end credits? One interesting point was that we did the whole Concerto in those two 3-hour recording sessions, but they only used the beautiful opening the film, none of the jazzy stuff, too bad.
