microphone placement

My daughter's all-state audition is coming up. Her band director
told the kids to be sure the mike was about 18 to 20 inches from the instrument during the audition taping. That seems very close
to me. Any comments?

Hi Dan , Congrats, I just knew you'd have another skillful cl'ist in the family!! The only advice I can give is from my "ancient" dance band experiences with a mike [for singer's vocals,re: volume "setting], where I played "beside it" NOT bell-into-it at a distance where I could hear myself. I've seen a few "setups" by classic/jazz pros using at least two mikes to get a reasonable balance. Hope some of them will chime in with modern advice! Luck, Don

It depends on how loud the microphone setting is. If its too loud back up, too soft, get closer. Complicated stuff,whewwwww

Best to use two mics. Aim one over the finger holes and one at the bell. Adjust the distance depending on how hot the mics are and if you are getting too much key noise. Balance the two mics to get the desired recorded tone.
