 Malerne basses -- they're everywhere!!

I think I've noted in the past that many bass clarinets from the '40s through '70s time period that have been showing up on eBay, were actually stencils made by Robert Malerne in Paris. These Malerne-made brands have included Conn, Olds, Linton, York, Henri Dubois, Lyons-Monarch, Getzen, and now we can add to the list............

EVETTE-SCHAEFFER! Yes, that's right, one of your favorite Buffet companies was selling Malerne bass clarinets, see one on eBay (missing the alternate Ab/Eb lever, but the post for it is still there): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=902463546

Speaking of which, currently on eBay there is yet another Malenre-made Conn bass clarinet: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=903078873

Many of you out there that claim to have never seen a Malerne bass clarinet probably have, but didn't know it.

Word to the wise. Bid, Win, and then have THEM ship it to Dave S for you for a real tune-up. You will have an excellent instrument, to last you a lifetime. BEEN THERE__DONE THAT!!

Well said, Bob. Dave, did I mention my #2 bass, a hard rubber Linton, a "3/4ths Full" Boehm [no fork Eb/Bb] quite good even without double register keying. When EBAY comes back on, I'll look at the Conn, as I have a '40's Conn wood [to low E only, but with D R K !] and have wondered about its ancestry. Good horns, but expert repair/restoration is needed. Don

Dave:

There have also been a couple of Linton altos on eBay recently. The postings said thay had serial numbers such as "5J276**" Are these Malerne stencils? I cannot find any serial number on the Linton I bought last Spring (which I will be sending to you for rehab one of these days). Thanks for any information you can provide.

I also agree, W H, my Linton' ser.# is 5M23794, with L's logos "beside" the highest trill key pad and between the two lowest body-bottom pads. It looks exactly the same as the pic, "in-line" reg and Bb key/pads, artic C#/G# and yes, a removed Ab/Eb lever. Years ago when I talked with Jack Linton, we only discussed oboes, but I gathered he [in Elkhart] only made oboes and bassoons. The only old alto I have is a Pedler, quite different, but much the same structure as my old Ped. bass, pp [pretty poor!]. Don

William and Don,
I haven't paid much attention to the serial numbers of the various "incarnations" of Malerne and Malerne-stencil instruments I've worked on, but if memory serves I've seen various forms of serial numbers as well as sometimes no number at all. I would guess that when selling instruments to Conn, Linton, etc., Malerne didn't put any serial numbers on the instruments and left it up to the "stencil" company to put their own logos and/or numbers on the horns. I still have an unrestored "Linton-stencil" alto clarinet at home, I'll take a look at it this weekend and see how it's marked. Don, I believe the older Conns such as your "low-E" were actually made by Conn in Elkhart (it should be marked "Elkhart, Indiana" somewhere as opposed to "Made in France"). And as Jack Kissinger (I believe it was) found out a few years ago, many of the Linton soprano clarinets are actually Buffet stencils.

I believe there is some truth in this statement. But you people can relax, those instruments were not made in the same factory where the Pro Buffets are made. I've compared a wooden Linton with Evette Sponsored by Buffet and can tell you that they were identical and BTW, I found nothing special about them.
