I have finally decided to say something about the absolute rubbish I keep hearing (not on this board, thankfully) about the position of Associate Principal Clarinet in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I have been told by four seperate people in the clarinet industry, ie reed sellers, instrument sellers & techs, in the past two weeks that the former Assoc. Prin. Clar. in the MSO was sacked at the start of the year after over twenty years service.
I can categorically say that this is a heap of rubbish. How do I know?
Well unlike all of those people who think they know what went on the day Ian retired, I was actually sitting next to him in the orchestra that day. As Co-Principal clarinet of the Australian Youth Orchestra this year, we were doing a combined concert with the MSO where they played principal parts and we played second parts, in the particular concert Ian was on principal and I was on second in the Barber Violin Concerto.
It was at the dress rehearsal on that Saturday morning that Ian informed the orchestral management and the clarinet section of the pain in his lip that he was experienceing, and had been experiencing for a prolonged period while playing E flat. The pain was keeping him awake at night and taking the enjoyment away from him. This was, from what I understand to be one of the major reasons in his decision to step down.
He was not forced out
He was not kicked out
He was not sacked
He left after one of the most distinguished clarinet careers Australia has ever seen, and left as one of the best orchestral players I have ever heard.
I have the utmost respect for the MSO management team, the clarinet section and Ian Morgan and I find any suggestion that Ian was sacked disgracefull and reprehensible.
If anyone on the board disagrees with my account of the events of that day, please respond, but with some proof as I am sick of hearing lies and hurtful rumours about a great player.
Thanks for letting me vent my anger at a small group of fools.

you're co-principal of the AYO? I thought you mainly did bass stuff with them...
anyway, i can see why you're annoyed, but rumours always circulate in the music world, and its probably best to just let it all calm down.

Andrew,
true or not, I'd have to say that while you were sitting next to him physically, you were not privy to the goings on between the orchestra and the players. Most families don't air their dirty linen in public.
But whatever the case, it doesn't really mean anything in the long run.

May I ask what was the official outcome of the associate principal audition the MSO held earlier this year? Why did no one get the job?

As David Thomas said at the conference, no played well enough on the day, simple as that.

I have been doing a lot of bass with the AYO organisation, at camp and in AYO, for the past few years but this year I also got to play principal clarinet in some pieces. In the MSO program, we only played B flat when the MSO were with us, while I played bass and soprano when the AYO were by themselves. In the second season, I played principal, 2nd and 2nd/bass parts, whatever was needed.
My audition was OK, but nothing very special at all this year unfortunatly. How was your's? Where abouts are you?
