We only need the question once.

Since I'm feeling a little guilty this morning about my response last night to your band question (it was late and I was in a flip mood), I'll try and give you a little help here:

One good source of free sheet music is right here at this site:

http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Music/index.html

The mirror to Oliver Seely's site here is a particularly good source. .PDF files can be printed from Adobe Acrobat (you can download a reader for free if you don't have one). If you have music notation software that can read Finale or midi files, there is even more available to you. (If you don't have such software, search the bulletin board for references to inexpensive (free?) software. Not only will you have the sheet music, your computer will be your accompanist.) In most cases, dynamics and articulation are missing but it appears that Oliver has been updating some of his files to include them. There is also a link to his site from the mirror. It might be worth following. I'm not sure how often Mark updates the mirror (or does Oliver do that?) but, it seems to me, I've seen things on the original site that weren't (yet) on the mirror. Oliver is scrupulous about only using public domain music.

Another site where you can find a few pieces of free music is:

http://www.sowash.com/Scores.html

In particular, check out "College Town Diary:12 Months in Gambier." Rick is a humorist/composer who writes very accessible (mostly chamber) music. (This is a very subjective comment but, to me, his music sounds like what Grandma Moses would have written if she had been a composer instead of a painter. "Primitive" Americana.) He has done a number of works involving the clarinet and pretty much sells his stuff for the cost of copying and shipping. Based on the recording I have of his music, I think he deserves to be played more often -- perhaps on College recitals as an alternative to the ever-present Arnold "Sonatina" and Poulenc "Sonata." (Jack ducks the flying flames from the world of .edu.)

Finally, the granddaddy of midi sites for the clarinet is:

http://www.musicbysunset.com/

Some free music there in midi format and .PDF format. A music store full for a small "donation." This site is controversial. Alot of the music there is public domain but some is almost certainly not. Considering the state of scanning software and the sheer volume at this site, where the files came from and whether the owner has license from any publishers is a mystery to me. Let your conscience be your guide.

Best regards,
jnk

Mark's been pretty lax - it's been about a year.
