Choose people you know will work together well, will turn up to rehersals, and will be enthusiastic about the whole thing. You know the people concerned, so take this into account. Also, have you ASKED them whether they'd like to do it? I think you'll find that making a band sound really good is a lot more work than you think.

Personally, i'd say you definately need a rhythm section, and probably violin and cello wouldn't be my 1st choice for a band, but it can work.

Susannah -
I remember a PBS airing of Lyle Lovett a couple of years back that included a marvelous 'cellist - some really wild solo work :) I think I have a tape of it somewhere. First rule: (apology to Nahya :) Don't rule anything out.

Ron B - I agree with you in principle, but seriously, they did ask for an opinion, and i clearly stated that it was ONLY an opinion

("probably violin and cello wouldn't be my 1st choice for a band, but it can work.")

One of my bands has violin, clarinet, accordion, tuba, and a vocalist who percusses. I want to add an official drummer, but we can't find one...

My other group has 9 people, but the people needed for any given gig varies because we play so many different kinds of music. This group includes 2 violinists, me on clarinet, an accordion, a bassist who plays tuba, a guitarist, a drummer, a guy who plays a Bulgarian fiddle called "gadulka," and another guy who plays too many different instruments to name.

My third group is a woodwind quintet. Not exactly a "band." ;)

Hmm. How about drums, guitar, bass, keyboard and sax. (Don't need any stinkin' clarinet!) ;^)

There's allways room for Chello.

Voicing is important, but so is projection.

I would choose the instruments that carry best with least amplification.... lug one set speakers after a late-night gig and you'll come over to the Dark side....

It may be unorthodox, but the progenitors of your idea, Quartetto Gelato (yes, there's room for Gelato, too) use an accordion to knit things together.

The bass line is carried between the squeeze box and cello.

If you all double then you have more variety of sound. You yourself could play flute, clarinet, and 2 or 3 saxes. Doubling etc is standard requirement for reed players for pit playing.
