I'm in the process of organizing my community band's library (it's never been done before) and we have several pieces that are out of print and are missing parts. I've tried ordering the parts - with no success and for this reason or that, I'm not able to write out the parts either nor have I been successful at tracking down people who may have held on to their part for 20 odd years or so. (No one ever moves from here either!)
Does anyone know of a website that acts as a "clearing house" for out of print music? I'm hoping there's someplace I can go to where I can post a list of I'm looking for and hopefully someone out there would have the part.

As was noted in a BB thread a couple of weeks ago, provisions of the GATT treaty have made it impossible to purchase some music with copyright in former eastern block nations. A first cl. part to the Shostakovich 5th or Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf? FORGET IT!
I suppose there might be some serious legal issues to consider, that might even make it impossible, but it sure would be great to have a clearing house like the one William proposes, a place where one could sell and purchase music like this too.

Then you can post your needs and hope that someone might reply privately. And you might try searching the archives (don't think you need to join for this).
From time to time, a participant posts info on music sources. And there's been considerable discussion on how to interpret the copyright laws.

The US allows people to re-sell their copies without further payments to copyright holders (first-sale doctrine) so re-selling out-of-print parts is perfectly acceptable under US law.

Try getting in touch with other community bands or high schools in the area. We did this while looking for a part for "The Barber of Seville" - a sax, I think. At any rate, sometimes other bands may be able to lend/rent/sell a part. A lot of schools may not perform to the level of what some may expect, but they often have a variety of music. My school had all kinds of great stuff that hadn't been opened in years, just because the bands had evolved to be better, worse, or just looking for a different type of music.
(I don't know the legal logistics, but I'm sure something is possible.)

If... only a few parts are missing and you have a full score... look for a band member (retired perhaps) to copy (and transpose if necessary) the missing part(s). This can be done manually or more readably with a notation program.

This is an ongoing problem - years ago when I played in a community group, we had to pay a bond (it was around $100) that was fully refunded when we left ... that is, when we left and handed in our music.
It was kind of tough on some, but that was the band's rulling and the library was in great shape 99.9% of the time.
