How is everything with the orchestra these days? I know that Dohanyi is now gone and left with a farewell concert of Wagner music which sounded fantastic! How is this new guy Welster Most and what is his claim to fame? Is the adjustment going smoothly..up here in Canada we have just got over the Dutiot crisis with his quick departure. It seems they (orchestra) and him were on a pretty uneven keel and now Montreal is looking for a permanant director.
It seems alot of orchestras at the moment are like this...
New York"s Kurt Masur is ill apparently, and of course Boston is expecting great things from Levine. Ozawa left Boston in a huff....interesting stuff....
There are few big names around these days and the big name conductors are spread thin. I also know that Cleveland is the smoothest and most polished of orchestras. Bassoonist Dave McGill came here to do the world Premier of the Morawitz Bassoon Concerto(he was with Cleveland at the time). I guess he is now with Chicago... so if anyone knows how is Cleveland looking with their knew Concductor?

Welser-Most begins leading with the new fall season, which I believe begins in early/mid September. Ja Ja Ling led the orchestra over the summer season at Blossom Music Center.

Really, Mr. Dow, it does no good to cite a source who doesn't back up your position. I've read Mr. Sandow and I find his writings more about his own dislike for the current state of the orchestra and Ozawa than about Ozawa's attitude towards the BSO. The only hint of him being unhappy, as Mr. Sandow reported, was regarding the shake-up at Tanglewood years ago. Perhaps I've missed something.
Mr. Ozawa's leave-taking was as long and drawn out as could be imagined for a music director with a 25-year tenure. Much fanfare was provided by institution and media with little mention of the acrimony you claim.
The orchestra members themselves, while having the common dislike for nearly every conductor, do, for the most part, hold a deep respect for Ozawa. The Malcolm Lowe and Jules Eskin quotes were cut to pieces in order to provide some fodder for Sandow but really can't be trusted as they are too fragmented. The only extensive quote Sandow provides could be read coherently in any number of contexts. The concertmaster and principal cello positions are ones of a great political, as well as artistic, nature and I find it un-like Mr. Lowe to spout off in any way such as that. Mr. Sandow seemingly has created quotes from snippets of longer documents in order to backup an argument that has nothing to do with the original concerns of the document. I leave it to the reader to decide the trustworthiness of Mr. Sandow.
It was time for a change and Ozawa seemingly had an offer too sweet to pass up. As with any music director, there are good times, and bad, but Ozawa was sent off as well as any could be and to claim otherwise seems to be hoping a bit too much for more Jerry Springer antics were there are none.

I heard the Cleveland Orchestra in March and I would have to say that they are still one of the top orchestras in the US. I heard them do the Mahler 2 at Severence with Ling conducting. It was one of the most impressive concerts I have attended. Although I would have to say that when the Philadelphia Orchestra played Bruckner 9 this past March(gotta love Spring Break roadtrips), with Simon Rattle conducting, it was heavenly. I cannot wait for him to bring the Berlin Philharmonic over to the US in 2003.
