Does anyone know anything about the contra-alto clarinet part in the opera King Arthur of Chausson(sp?). I "heard" that this score makes use of the instrument to great effect.

diz...Recordings of Chausson's "Le Roi Arthus" are rare. I think there is one with one of the Vienna orchestras, but I have not heard it, or seen the full score.
However, knowing that Debussy had specific concerns as to Chausson's rich orchestral scoring of the music, (and voiced his strong opinion to Chausson) I would not be surprised if the contra clarinet had a prominent part.
I'll add this work to my list of pieces to soon listen to. Thanks to you my list keeps growing...GBK

Wonderful - if you happen to know where a full score is (i.e. NYC library - let me know)?
thanks

diz,
Wasn't there a symphony or something by Vincent d'Indy that specified use of a contra clarinet?

David...I think you might be referring to "Fervaal", an opera by D'Indy which not only contains a contra clarinet in the orchestra, but also four saxophones and eight saxhorns! ...GBK

GBK,
Thanks for the info --- I take it that the frightening instrumentation of "Fervaal" precludes it from obtaining frequent performances??

folk: please don't be distracted by the original question being railroaded by Spiegelthal and GBK - if you know anything of King Arthur - I'd be very interested (i.e. recordings, scores).
thanks
diz
p.s. - David Spiegelthal and GBK - diz never railroads a thread, ever (well, hardly ever)

diz: Speaking of railroading a thread, how come in California I pay less for 'Stralian groceries that you do in Australia?
Aside from that, thanks for having brought up this piece. I now share GBK's quest to hear it.
Regards,
John
