 Hite vs. Portnoy Mouthpiece
Author: Vic

I'd received some good advice here on mouthpieces a while back. I was looking for something with a bigger, "fatter" tone, for jazz. A Portnoy BP02 was recommended. My instructor put me onto a Hite Premier, which he said performed the same, but was substantially cheaper. I do like the Hite mpc and it does seem to give me a bigger sound. Right now I'm using a Rovner MkIII ligature on it with Mitchell Lurie 4 1/2s, Vandoren and Grand Concert 4s. But is he correct about the comparison to the Portnoy BP02? Is it really a case of getting even more for the extra money?

Vic,
Even within the same brand and with the exact same model or facing number, EVERY MOUTHPIECE IS DIFFERENT ---- try a few of each type and decide for yourself what works best for you. Nobody else here can tell you that!

Hite Premier is a cheap student mouthpiece with a very close lay. Even the J & D Hite model is an improvement. I may be mistaken but I was under the impression that an open lay and softer reed is the better jazz combination. I make this comment after 23 years as a professional player, mainly jazz.

Hite's Model "J" is a handmade mpc designed more for jazz, I believe.

Agree with David S on that one...I have two B40s which are very differnet from each other...and the same can be said for my two Kanter's and Kaspar's of the same facing. I have heard from other clarinet players the Hite mouthpiece is very good. As far as jazz mouthpieces I only know of the 5JB Vandoren and this isn't my territory at all so I will let the jazzers do that work!

Hi:
I believe you're looking for a HITE "J" facing.
I've been playing on HITE mouthpieces for years.
They're terrific!
I have a mouthpiece he makes for me, the "JJM" facing.
You might want to speak to David directly.
Try calling him to discuss your personel needs, he's very helpful.
Good luck, JJM
