 Top Ten Clarinet Recordings
Author: Marina
Date:   2002-08-26 03:02

Hi
Although I have played the clarinet on and off for 19 years, I do not have a large collection of clarinet recordings. I am now interested in building a collection (for both entertainment purposes and to pick up on style/sound).

I would be interested in your suggestions on what you consider to be the top ten clarinet related CDs to purchase in any style (classical, jazz or other).

Thanks.

I might humbly suggest Anthony Pay's wonderful double CD containing the 2 concerti and 1 concertino of Weber, plus the Crussel concerti (which are hugely under-rated/performed).

This CD is "veritas" label (I think) and it's the "Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment". This an 'authentic' romantic clarinet sounds - not a modern clarinet sound, if that makes a difference.

In my opinion, the following classical recordings would be great to build on (in no particular order):

1. Mozart clarinet concerto with Robert Marcellus and Cleveland orchestra
2. Schubert Octet with Boston Chamber players (Harold Wright on Clarinet)
3. Brahms and Mozart Clarinet quintets, Mitchell Lurie with Muir Quartet
4. Brahms, Schumann and Fuhrling clarinet trios with Michael Collins
5. Brahms Sonatas with Harold Wright on clarinet
6. Nielsen Clarinet Concerto with Louis Cahuzac
7. Copland Clarinet Concerto with Andrew Marriner
8. Louis Spohr Concertos 1-4 with Karl Leister
9. Rossini Theme and Variations with Charles Neidich
10. Any recording with either Daniel Bonade or Simon Bellison

Hope this helps!

I'll take the bait, too!

No particular order:

1. Ivo Papasov, Balkanology
2. Benny Goodman, On the Air, 1937-1938
3. Marcellus' recording of the Mozart concerto w/ Cleveland
4. Benny's recording of Bartok's Contrasts with Bartok and Szigeti
5. Nielsen concerto recorded by Kjell-Inge Stevensson (I haven't yet heard Cahuzac's...)
6. Shifrin's Mozart (paired with the Quintet)
7. Jimmie Noone, Apex Blues
8. Laver Bariu, Songs From the City of Roses
9. Sabine Meyer's Night at the Opera
10. Selim Sesler, Road to Kesan

If anyone wants more specific info on these recordings, let me know...

Katrina

Many above choices I agree with, but will add a few more classical choices:

Jon Manasse: Weber - The Complete Clarinet Music (2 volumes)
John Bruce Yeh: Ebony Concerto (Stravinsky, Gould, Bernstein, Shaw)
David Shifrin: Messaien - Quartet for the End of Time/Bartok - Contrasts
The Cleveland Orchestra (Szell) any or all of the Beethoven Symphonies (Marcellus playing principal clarinet)

Jazz:
Eddie Daniels - Breakthrough
Pete Fountain - The Best of Pete Fountain
Artie Shaw - the new 2 cd compilation (just released)
and of course, practically anything by Goodman and DeFranco ...GBK

I'm certainly glad you all can make a 10 best list, because
I can't.

It doesn't matter - in jazz - there's just SO much great stuff out there - and I suspect in classical too - that my [jazz] list would probably run to a minimum of 50+ of must have recordings of clarinet masters.

I'll do a list - if you like - but you'll have to be patient. Would you prefer a "technical virtuosity" list or a "played with feeling" list? Just re-reading your post though, it said "CD" I am thinking "individual performance" however I guess I could put together a CD list of sorts, but a lot of my favourites are on vinyl and maybe not available on CD.

Geez - pedantic ain't I?

Marcellus never shook the Szell thing....no chamber music recordings for the commercial market. Its too bad.

Many great recordings listed above to choose from. For an incredibly beautiful sound filled with style and elegance, I would add Gervase De Peyer recordings of Mozart Concerto and Brahms Quintet.

I like the Benny Goodman recording of the Copland Concerto. Also, notice that Acker Bilk hasn't made any lists :)

I agree with the recordings posted.

However to go out on a limb, the recording that Reginald Kell made of the Brahms and Mozart quintets would be on my list. The Brahms especially is done so well. He is so lyrical. It sings.

Gervase de Peyer has some of the best sound also. ("Shepherd on the Rock" with Beverly Sills - Melos Ensemble I think)

And lastly, the best sound of any clarinet I have heard on recording that I have is Jonathan Cohler's CD "The Clarinet Alone" His sound is my goal when I play.

Jazz:
Eddie Daniels - Swing Low Sweet Clarinet

His version of "Sing, Sing, Sing" on this CD is THE best -- IMHO.

Sharon Kam is great. I have the Mozart/Krommer. There is also a Weber (the 2 concerti + grand duo) and her latest one: American classics with the Copland, Bernstein, etc. She's a very fine young artist.
