I just had a laugh looking at the page for Eric Barr, principal oboist for the Dallas Symphony, where he says that most oboists only have one hobby -- making reeds.
I hope we clarinet geeks aren't THAT single-minded.
So what does everyone like to do when they put the horns away?
For my part, my other big interest is commercial aviation. I'm the only person I know who enjoys airport layovers because I get to watch the planes. I collect 1/400-scale diecast airliner models and have a pretty good assortment of aviation enthusiast books and magazines. Since I live in a city with two naval air stations nearby, the Blue Angels come here every year and I never miss them. One day I'll get my crud together and take flying lessons.
Also love Notre Dame football. A buddy and I made a pilgrimage to the ND-USC game in '99 and had a great time.
Add baseball and exercise to my list.
Anyone else?

Landscape and/or fantasy oil painting, pen and drawing (depending on weather conditions); otherwise, just enjoying the great outdoors. Indoor hobby: (with an apology to Nahya for the :::::) building prototype (experimental) steam engines. Ocassional volunteer activity, yard work, painting, clean up - helping folks with things they need help with. Participated in an old-fashioned barn raising a few years back. Great memorable experience

As an oboe player also, I spend a lot of time on reeds. However, it could be worse, that is, if one had to make reeds for students too. As a former driver of a 15/30 IHC tractor, I also find old machinery and tractors kind of interesting but have no place in the city for them. Playing in several groups, etc becomes very time consuming because one tends to practice for the next gig or rehearsal leaving little time for non musical activities.

Quality time with my young kids, playing multi-instruments in shows, badminton tramping (i.e. NZ 'hiking'), making and repairing anything that is not electronic, camping, festival movies and live theatre, singing in a gay choir, ethnic food, helping tertiary students in a variety of subjects, tending 50 varieties of fruit and nut trees, satisfying insatiable appetite for ever-richer understanding of my total environment - people and material - hence internet addiction.

What an interesting/diverse group of hobbies, they make very enjoyable reading. My senior years are kept busy, hopefully somewhat productive, by library-bookstore involvement, a bit of genealogy-history research, a bit of patent-looking-up and doing minor repairing-advising chores re: woodwinds, mostly for school kids, my "public-service". Also "honey-do's". Don

I enjoy cooking, I am a chef as my job right now, and I absoulutly love cooking, music more, but it is equally as skill demanding as well as equipment laden as music.

building my log home, raising dogs (old english mastiff),shoot pool (just got my own table),riding horses,reading (fiction),movie watching and my most important hobbie is enjoying each and everyday. it'a a tough life but some one has to do it.

I'm a single Mom. I work part time, Home school the 4 children, teach a 5 yr. old Sunday School class, chauffer the kids to practices, games, and activities, and just plum work full time at home......... I was SO thrilled to say that THE CLARINET was my official hobby. (haha)
But when I can, I will crochet doilies, afghans, and such. I also cross stitch some. I raise a variety of pets and a joyful diversity of friends that are always around!!!
Enjoy it all. I would have to say that if I had my dream home with the horses and all...........the Clarinet would probably fall to second place as far as hobbies go.

Well, I have a full-time day job (not involving music), plus I'm an adjunct professor of business at a local university, so I don't have a whole lot of time for anything but those - main hobby is the clarinet. But on the infrequent occasions when there is some spare time: golf, photography, reading, and, as GBK mentioned, anything involving chocolate.

Like Ralph G., I don't mind being held up at a RR crossing.............I am enamored with trains (for more than 50 years now).
Also, amateur radio, bicycling, travel (I have always had wonder-lust, and I sure miss my motorhome), photography (black & white, preferred), and"wishing" I could play clarinet.
Trouble is, a job gets in my way but it's catch 22.
BTW Bob G., I have always enjoyed pool and hope I can get out your way some time to shoot a couple of games.

My music realted hobbies include writing and singing.
On the other end of the spectrum, I enjoy reading, writing poetry, drilling for ROTC (I get to throw 15 pound rifles 10 feet in the air and catch them spinning at 300 rpm , what fun!), peer counseling, running, working out, and - get this, what other guys do you know like this? - home design.

I played Rugby Union for 15 years until I was 30 and was a competitive cyclist until 35 running second in my last race, only D grade 26 kilometres so nothing that exciting, I was forced to retire from sporting activities due to lack of knee cartlidge material, smashed right shoulder, dodgy ribs and a fallen arch in my left foot. In my spare time, I work seven days a week as a musician, I am writing a thesis on brass and military bands. I try to consume a fair quantity of beer, Tooheys Black a local beverage, keep up an active interest in horse and greyhound racing but mainly I play them and fix them.
Some people have said that I should find a life. By the way Diz I use off the shelf bassoon reeds and they are fine. Oboists are just precious.

I am into model trains. I have always loved trains. We have some 50 year old Lionel trains that were given to my son by my father that look like they are brand new! ( My brother and I were not allowed the touch them as kids! ;~o ) They sat in his attic for over 35 years - needless to say nothing worked very well. So I have spent many hours restoring them. I also am a bit of a motor head as I have a 1947 Chevy Fleetmaster Coupe and a 1970 Triumph GT6+. I boast of having one of the few examples of these cars with all the electrical components working! But alas, its motor has blown! (Any British car enthusiast has a big grin on his face right now!) Also, I have been riding my motorcycle every chance I get for the last 20 years! I also have done a fair amount of backpacking around the US and plan to do more.

If your not talking about the breed of dog, then your dribbling problem was supposed to stop when you stopped dragging your afghan with you wherever you go.
How do you crochet an afghan?? Patience, Patience, and more patience. You ought to learn how. It's also relaxing.

Thanks to all who've replied! This has been interesting reading. Gosh, from golf, curling, drawing, oil painting, car maintenance and model railroading, you fine folks sure run the gamut of activities. Clarineting does stimulate the ol' melon.

I am an active collector and opperator of Lionel trains. My grandfather started me on them scince I was born. I am not ashamed to say that I have accumulated so much knowledge on Lionel trains that I could write a book on it. The years of 1945 through 1969 is my specialty.If I had the computor know how I would start an "O" guage discussion forum.

Tons of other stuff... full time job, play sax in a Big band. Drive and repair antique cars instead of modern ones. Right now I am working on casting my own parts... pumps and valves for a 1902 steam car I am restoring.
