 leaking through the nasal cavity
Author: Julia

Hi everyone!
Do any of you know anything about how to help correct this problem of leakage from the nasal cavity? What happens is you can hear the leaking when playing, but its not air from the embouchure---you can tell that it sounds from the throat. I did a search on this board and found nothing. I also searched online and didn't find too much. If any of you could help me, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!!

Julia

Search under "palatal leak", as it has been discussed here before...GBK

Also search in the Klarinet Archives (also "palatial leak", its misspelled cousin)

Julia, I have this too. It is definately a pain in the you know what. Mine seems to vary... it seems to worsen when i am under stress or have played alot at one sitting. I try to pace myself throughout the day by practicing at least twice if not three times, and stopping when I begin to notice it. Most of the time, when i am relaxed, i tend not to notice it and it is inconsequential to my playing. Last spring I went to an ear, nose and throat specialist and he told me that the reason it was occuring was because one of my adenoids(?) was slightly larger than normal and it was not allowing the air passage to seal completely. He told me it could be removed in a relatively simple procedure, but I wanted a second opinion on this before I act. My greatest fear would be trying to fix it and instead make it worse. There was an article on this in the ICA magazine a few years back and a teacher gave me a copy of it (not with me though, i'm at college). If you can find someone who has this article, it might answer some of your questions. I sometimes get discouraged, but when i think of everything i've done with clarinet, I realize it has never really stopped me from achieving my goals and doing what i love. (:

A little more about my 2nd practice with the community band......

I noticed while the orchestra was tuning together at the beginning of practice that the clarinet player beside me had the sound of air escaping along with her tuning note.

Is this what you are talking about. It really seems like a waste of good air, but she didn't seem out of breath for it.

--Interesting diagnosis by your ENT. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed at the time time when I was 2-years old. I am 44 now, been playing clarinet since I was 10 and never had a problem with air leakage from my nose. However, when I took up tenor saxophone as a double, (10 years into playing clarinet) within 2 months I started developing problems with air leakage. After I quit playing sax altogether it went away in a couple weeks and I've haven't had another occurence since. Strange stuff.
