I'd be interested to hear comparisons of reed strengths
between Gonzalez and V12's from those of you who have
tried the Gonzalez reeds. For example, the guys at Davie
cane told me that the Gonzalez 4.5 and V12 4.5 should
be comparable, but the Gonzalez 4.5's play significantly
harder for me.

i really like the 3.5 Gonzalez FOF reed with my "resistant" mouthpiece i'm using at the moment- but i find FOF 3.5 to be softer than V12.... the Mozart reed doesn't work well with the 'piece that i'm currently using (although, i used one in a concert yesterday, but i'd done lots of adjusting on it) but when i tried some out on my old mouthpiece (that i stupidly sold to a friend in 1996, and have regretted doing so since!) they worked really well. I find the Mozart to be about equivilant to V12 in strength, maybe a bit harder.
Reccently (using FOF and Mozart) i've recieved many good comments on my tone from colleages in Pro and Semi Pro orchestras.... i'd have to say more so than usual.... at a guess partly because of reeds and partly because of ALL THE PRACTISE i've been doing (a reed on its own doesn't make any sound)

This is really to relevant but I feel like venting a little. I have been using gonzalez reeds for a while. I have broken my reeds in properly but i don't know. I had this audition today.. and the reed hollowed out as i was playing. It must have been the most aweful expierence i have had in a audition in a long time...

FOF is a bit (¼) softer than V12 the same strength. I didn't notice any deference between FOF and Mozart in strength....V

write more james- i really like the FOF, but i don't think it's "perfect" or anything like that.... i did have a solo concert (in July) where ALL my reeds were suddenly too soft, but then that's happened before with other brands (on this occaision most of them were FOF). I thought i sounded awful but no one else thought this (one person- another clarinetist- did say that i wasn't as "big" as usual tone wise)
i'd be interested in hearing a longer description of your sad story- could it be that as you got stressed out tension encouraged you to bite on the reed a bit more? do you spend a lot of time in the practise room, and not much time doing quality practise/playing in large halls/spaces? (another problem i've experienced now and again with ALL reeds- the "it sounds good in the practise room" syndrome).
please let us know some more, i know how it feels!

For a start, I wouldn't compare these two. I use Gonzales for orchestral/large ensemble work (Their sound cuts through and blends better through registers), and Vandoren for solo work/chamber music (a more colourful tone).
By the way, how do you get to use a full box for V12s?! I am lucky to get 1 good one! And don't start me on Gonzales...!

I found narrowing down v12s help out with making them work. I haven't played on v12s for a year and don't miss playing on them at all.
